C.S.I.A. Certified Chimney Sweep Regional Vice President New York State Chimney Guild National Chimney Sweep Member Owner of Safety First Chimney Sweeps for 23 Years

"Mr. Baker spread tarps to protect the rug and area surrounding the mouth of the fireplace. He cleaned the chimney of all of the maple limbs and leaves a squirrel was stuffing in it. He then capped the chimney to avoid having the same problem all over again. The problem has ceased, thanks to Mr. Baker's work. He was courteous, friendly, and a pleasure to have doing the necessary work."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

Inspect annually for damage, clean debris, and reapply sealant to maintain protection.

It generally involves soft washing with eco-friendly detergents to remove contaminants, avoiding high-pressure methods that can damage materials.

Ideally, you will tackle removing algae from your roof during spring or summer when the weather is drier and warmer. Because algae tends to grow during the colder and wetter months, you want to tackle this project before the temperature drops to hopefully keep it from coming back at all.

You may become so frustrated with the look of moss on your roof that you contemplate whether to clean or replace your roof. Fortunately, you don’t have to go as far as replacing it. After cleaning the moss, you can use a chemical solution to keep it away. For further protection, trim branches that overhang the roof, as fallen seed pods and leaves on the roof allow moisture to collect, encouraging moss growth. Consider adding zinc-coated flashing to the roof, too. As rain washes across the zinc, it leaves zinc particles behind that inhibit moss growth.

Iron, or ferrous sulfate, is one of the fastest methods for killing moss. As such, you’ll find this ingredient in many lawn fertilizers and lawn killers. Vinegar is another solution for quickly killing moss. It takes just 15 to 20 minutes for vinegar to take effect. A harsher method is bleach, which also has a similar time frame for taking effect.
