"Joe Woods and Just Right Carpentry did a superb job building our new deck. They were responsive, kind, and easy to work with. In addition to building a beautiful deck at a reasonable price, they left everything neat and clean after they left. They went above and beyond and I will certainly use their services again."

"Perfect. They did excellent work. Very professional and very clean as well. I don't think another carpenter could have done what needed to be done as well as Carlos did. I am extremely pleased."

"Anthony called back very quickly. We needed a portable air conditioner installed in our porch with a cutout to outside. He did a great job and was very neat which I love. We are contracting him to do more work for us. He was a great find. We recommend him very highly."

Small jobs welcome

"Everything was done well. Called the Plainview Handyman Franchise at (516) 349-7500 since they are the only one currently listed as licensed in Nassau County, NY. Most contractors are too busy to take care of small repairs and are not available to show up when you need them. This company has experienced individuals who arrive as scheduled and get the work done. My repaired bifold doors do not look brand new, but they work well-for now we can postpone the expense of replacing them. If we decide to replace them, this company's workers will be able to install new doors. They currently charge by time. We expect that we will call them again as needed."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Installing an ornamental or decorative porch column takes around three to five hours. Structural columns take longer because your pro has to install a jack to hold up the roof while switching the column out. If there's any structural damage, it can add several days to the timeline to repair the damage.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
