3 years of experience

I started a small welding company last year that focuses on custom project designs and mobile equipment repair. I've built custom coffee tables, nightstands, and other various household items. I've also worked on repairs for heavy equipment, hauling trailers, and RV/motorhomes. I work Mon-Fri, 7-3 as a welder for Finger Lakes Roofing in Victor NY. Anytime outside of that, I am willing to work. I graduated from SUNY Alfred in 2018 with my Associate's degree in welding and starting my own business has been a goal of mine ever since. I also graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2020 with my Bachelor's degree in business, which gave me more confidence to start and run my own business.

My specialty is building smaller steel structures, but anything to do with metal is right up my alley. I've also spent time doing heavy equipment repair and tedious fabrication jobs such as railings. I have four years professional experience, yet welding has been a passion and hobby of mine for over a decade. I take a great amount of pride in my work and always aim to exceed my customers expectations.

Welding questions, answered by experts

Yes, professional fabricators can create custom pieces, including railings, sculptures, signage, and architectural elements.

Some states require welders to be licensed and certified, while others don’t. However, it’s always a good idea to hire a licensed welder, regardless of requirements in your area, especially if you need welding for structural components of your home or gas lines. Licensed welders have gone through training and testing to prove their skills, so they’re less likely to make a mistake that could be detrimental to your home. Use Angi’s state licensing tool to determine whether your potential hire has a welding license.

A steel beam is stronger than a wood beam and requires fewer vertical supports underneath, which means it’s a better option for larger structures or if you want an open space under your home that doesn’t have posts as obstructions. However, steel I-beams cost more than wood ones, and they can be difficult to install retroactively, as getting them into the basement area can be challenging, if not impossible.

You should pick steel for your new support beam for a few reasons. While steel is more expensive than other materials, such as laminated veneer lumber or glulam, it offers the following benefits:

  • Fire-resistant

  • Unaffected by pests

  • Longer-lasting

  • Stronger against water damage (when galvanized against rust)

Yes, an LVL beam is more affordable than the cost of a steel I-beam, totaling between $50 and $200 per linear foot as opposed to the $100 to $400 per linear foot you’d pay for a steel I-beam. Not only is the wood material more affordable than steel, but it’s also more similar to traditional wooden beams and doesn’t require as much retrofitting to connect joists.
