"I highly recommend JAC Creative Stone Works. Joe is professional and very knowledgeable. They installed a backsplash in our kitchen. It looks beautiful. Joe called a couple of days after the work was completed to see if we were satisfied. I will be using JAC Creative Stone Works for a future bathroom project."

"The job was done quickly efficiently and neatly in a 1903 house where leveling and a stiff floor was essential. Working on older houses can prove challenging. A previous contractor's job was so poor the tile had to be torn out and thrown away. The new installation looks like new construction, It is solid and level. Mr. Rodriguez was consistently polite and cooperative. He did preparation and cleanup work that was not required in the contract. He also made suggestions and did work that involved significant amounts of time and labor without asking for increased compensation. We have already asked him if he would undertake other projects with us."

"We are completely THRILLED in every way! We are totally wowed by not only the outstanding quality of the work, but the speed with which it was done: 5.5 days. As a point of comparison, another similarly sized bathroom, with very similar reno needs, in our house is nearly done but still not complete, after 3+ MONTHS, with another contractor. After reading a review here of bathroom work that resembled what we needed, and that job's time to completion, we hired Italian Painting Co. in hopes that this 3rd-floor bathroom might be completed around the same time as the other contractor's work in our home. As it turned out, Joe and Juan beat them! (Please do write a review, as it really helps us the customers as well as a highly deserving company like Joe's!) As we paid the bill for this work today, we already asked Joe to return for an estimate on another big job in our basement, which is a great testament to his superb work. Joe was extremely responsive, quickly answering my initial inquiry and then coming the very next day to give an estimate on the spot. That was last Friday, and he began work on Monday. He and his assistant showed up every day at 8:15 a.m., took a very quick lunch, and got right back to work. My husband is retired and I work from home, so it's very easy for both of us to "keep an eye" on what's happening with any work being done. I noticed no distractions--no music, no chit-chat, and only a few very short work-related phone calls. Joe went way beyond the call of duty in offering to drive me to a tile store and, another day, to Home Depot to pick up a toilet, since we don't own a car. Joe even gave his well-articulated professional opinion when I asked him to, to our other contractor's crew when they discovered they had totally messed up a painting job of our kitchen cabinets! Something that seems easy, like installing a shower rod, was not in our case, because one end of the rod had to be attached to a sharply angled wall--and Joe handled that with no trouble. He also suggested filling in the gap left over from a prior reno job (in 2014) between the vanity and wall, which revealed the ugly pipes jutting from the side of the vanity into the wall. Joe built about a 4-inch wide frame covering that on the top, next to the vanity, and alongside the front; then tiled it with the same white subway tile we used for the bath/shower area (see photo). It looks fantastic! I appreciate having a bit more counter space now--and especially having those pipes hidden. Joe and Juan were extremely amicable, polite, and tidied up every day. Even the guys who came to pick up the demo debris were fast and clean, leaving no traces of the (temporary) mess in our driveway. As a home owner who can think of some fixer-upper sort of job that needs to be done almost every day of the week, I am ecstatic that we have met Joe and the crew at Italian Painting Co. I appreciate that he made excellent suggestions and also was happy to hear and accept my opinions. As mentioned, we already have him in mind for additional jobs, and we have heartily recommended him to our next-door neighbor, too. It is really reassuring and comforting to have a go-to interior/exterior professional we can call on for any future needs. I look forward to writing another review then about their stellar and comprehensive work, top-notch professionalism, and all-round good nature. Bravissimo, Giuseppe, e molte grazie a Italian Painting Co.!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

It’s easiest to start from an edge as it gives you a straight line. A problem may arise if your edge doesn’t line up perfectly, in which case it’s best to start from the center. Some think that starting tile from the center adds a focal point in the center of the hearth.

There are no unbreakable rules of design, but experts recommend against using large tiles in areas with poor subflooring where they’re more prone to cracking, in areas where the floor isn’t entirely level, over raised areas or dips, and in bathrooms where budget is the primary concern. The size of your bathroom shouldn’t be a reason not to use large tiles; in fact, larger tiles, also known as slab tiles, can be a modern and sleek choice for bathroom floors and walls.

For glass tile, you want to use unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a stronger and grittier cement grout that is great for installing tiles with wider gaps and into joints. However, it is susceptible to scratching glass tile and is more difficult to use in thinner gaps. Unsanded grout, while more expensive, is easier to fit between thin gaps and is less harsh on delicate materials, like glass tile.

Tiles last for around 100 years or more. Tiles on backsplashes can last even longer since they’re less likely to crack under foot traffic or from accidental drops, but even tile in high-traffic flooring can last a century or more with proper installation and upkeep. Porcelain tiles are denser and stronger than standard ceramic tiles, so they’ll last longer, often pushing past the 100-year mark.

The number of boxes of tile you need depends entirely on the amount of tile in each box or case. Different manufacturers package their tiles differently, and boxes contain different amounts of tile depending on the size, shape, and material. Often, the amount of area that a case will cover is listed in the product description. To calculate the number of boxes you need, take the total square feet of the space and divide it by the number of square feet the box will cover.
