We are a Veteran owned, family owned and operated company proudly serving Central New York and the Fingerlakes Region. We thrive on business relationships that become long term, and work mostly on referred customers.

"We paid Matt at Family Ties Contracting over $35,000 to renovate our downstairs apartment in an agreed upon maximum of three months. The problems began early, with delays to the start of our project, but we cut him slack because one of his employees was injured in an accident. Not long after, we began getting bills for extras that 1) were already detailed in the contract and 2) were never signed off on. We were clear with Matt from the beginning that we wanted a space that was up to code, it wasn't till months later that we discovered he never even pulled a building permit - is a big "no no" where we live. Our local inspector did not seem happy about this and, in the process of inspections, we discovered other work that needed to be done to bring the apartment up to code, adding to the cost of our project. The problems continued when Matt began to refuse doing work that was clearly in the contract, from small jobs like installing the kitchen sink, to big ones like adding sheetrock to the ceiling to meet code, which was the first thing listed in our contract. The quality of the work was poor, we ended up having to hire a second electrician to install the correct type of outlet for our washer/dryer and a second plumber to fix a leaky sink which was installed. When the project was "finished" it was a mess (see pictures below). Worst of all, the project wasn't actually completed for 11 months - 8 longer than what was in our contracted, which resulted in the loss of a years worth of rental income. We were *constantly* calling them to come back and fix mistakes over this time, with varying degrees of success. To top it off, the owner apparently began spreading rumors about me and my wife because of the difficulties. I wouldn't have even bothered writing this, until I became aware of that. Overall, a totally unprofessional experience. We have spent over $52,000 so far and we are having to finish up by hiring outside contractors. We feel like we were screwed by Family Ties Contracting. It's not just the money and the poor results, but the stress and frustration made for an overall terrible experience."

We have many long-term customers that own homes or commercial properties in and around Ithaca. Some of our customers prefer us to work on a time and materials basis, and some prefer to have a bid. As the business owner, I am always the one to show up to look at and estimate a job. I have many long-term employees, and I also bring in specialists(architects, structural engineers, interior designers, etc.) on a as needed basis. We work out billing details for each project; for smaller bidded projects we typically do half down and then the last half on completion. For larger projects we break it down into more payment stages so our clients don't ever feel overextended but also so we have enough funding to operate in an efficient manner. We can carry financing on projects, yet typically that happens more frequently with commercial work. Payment plans are available. We offer a returning client discount.

Upscale Remodeling was founded in 1991 and has been serving our Ithaca community for more than 30 years, but our roots in the area go back centuries. The ancestors of our founder, Steve Nash, settled the Ellis Hollow/Snyder Hill area in the early 1800s and built some of the region’s first homes. Steve learned building by working with his father and grandfather from the age of nine. More importantly, he learned to never compromise and never cut corners. These values still guide us to this day, ensuring that every project is not merely a job but a testament to our commitment to excellence. At Upscale Remodeling, we’re not just remodeling homes; we’re building a legacy. We refuse to compromise on quality because our roots in this community run deep, and we plan to remain here for many generations to come. Our tradition of craftsmanship drives our commitment to timeless design and durable construction. We are proud of our work, and we want our clients to be able to enjoy it for many years to come. Our commitment to excellence isn’t just a catchphrase—it’s who we are, what our company stands for. As we continue this proud tradition of building and remodeling, our focus remains fixed on delivering enduring quality to you and your family.

"This is a great company to work with. Our project involved tricky design and construction issues and was complicated by the fact that there were certain elements that we were determined not to change. Upscale worked with us to develop a vision and a specific plan - from the major elements down to the trim - and implemented it beautifully. There were a few problems with subcontractors and we were so appreciative that Upscale held them to account for high quality work -- we did not have to complain, Upscale insisted that the work be done right. For high quality, detail and service oriented work we wholeheartedly recommend Upscale Remodeling!"

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

You don’t necessarily need to seal bathroom cabinets after painting, especially if you’ve used a gloss or semigloss paint. But adding a coat of high-quality sealant can add a layer of protection against bathroom moisture that can cause the wood to swell or warp or allow mold and mildew growth.

There are many options for choosing the best paint for cabinets. In general, interior enamel paint is considered a high-quality, strong, and long-lasting choice for cabinets. However, you can also go with a high-quality oil-based or latex water-based paint. Each has its own look and sheen—with high gloss, semi-gloss, and matte styles available. So, it comes down to personal preference.

A few things can indicate cabinet refinishing is a good idea, but the most obvious is any sign of water or steam damage. If the existing paint on your cabinets starts to bubble or flake, it could indicate that water or humidity from cooking or surrounding plumbing fixtures or showers is causing damage. Refinishing can add a protective layer to prevent further issues. You should also consider refinishing every eight to ten years, if your cabinet color or finish is outdated, or if you have scratches or scuffs on the faces.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.

Cabinetry is usually the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel, frequently making up 30% to 40% of the overall costs. Cabinets require a lot of materials and are time-consuming to install. However, you can save significantly by refinishing or refacing existing dated cabinets that are still in good working order. Appliances, countertops, and flooring are the other costly elements to budget for.
