"I had an emergency service need: the electric cable providing power to my home detached from the outside of my house during a wind storm. Pat Tapia, the owner of B-Dyson Electric, came the very next morning to assess the damage and review what needed to be done to install/re-attach the cable according to code so that my electric company could restore power by that evening. He explained what needed to be done and acted quickly to get the "emergency" electrical work permit from the County as well as getting the necessary equipment (which thankfully was in stock), to do the job. He answered all of my questions and kept me informed every step of the way. He and his crew were friendly and top notch professionals who completed the job by late afternoon so my power could be restored that night. I was and am truly grateful for the speed and professional installation that Pat and his crew performed, including clean up of items to be discarded. The bill was within in the amount I had hoped it would be -- especially based on the amount of work that needed to be done in a short amount of time. I highly recommend B-Dyson Electric for all of your projects that require a company with experienced, skilled and knowledgeable electricians."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

How often you’ll replace your electric meter depends on what type of meter you have in your home. Induction meters can last around 10 years, while static meters will typically last around 20. If you’re unsure which kind of meter you have, a call to your electric company can help ease your mind.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

If all of the outlets in one room suddenly stop working, it’s likely the result of a tripped circuit breaker. This easy-to-resolve malfunction is caused by overloading the circuit with too many working appliances at the same time. Locate the tripped breaker in your electrical panel and reset it to restore power.

How many string lights can be on one outlet depends on a number of varying factors, including the total wattage of your circuit, the type of lights, the energy needs of the lights, and cord specifications. It’s better to play it safe here to protect your circuit, so figure out the max wattage of your circuit, compare that to the lights, and move on from there. Generally speaking, LED string lights require less energy than incandescent bulbs, translating to a higher number of lights per circuit.

A multimeter does not measure frequency, charge, inductance, and other electrical quantities. Instead, it measures voltage (AC and DC), current, and resistance.
