"When I placed a request for the installation of two outlets on Angie's list, Steve got in touch right away but wasn't overly pushy either [which happens sometimes]. Between the three weeks I first spoke with him and the job, he was professional, informative, and responded to texts quickly and I knew exactly what to expect on-site as well as the cost. He sent pictures and cost of a similar job to help explain the work and the estimate. Steve identified some other issues with my electrical panel and made some small fixes--without increasing the cost of the job--and made some recommendations for me to consider in the future. He was courteous, professional, and seemed to care about the work and about communicating what he was doing and why. I would definitely turn to him first for my next job."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, a bad switch can cause other outlets not to work. If the switch is part of a circuit that controls multiple outlets, a fault in the switch can disrupt the entire circuit. It can happen if the switch is wired incorrectly, has a loose connection, or is damaged. Fixing or replacing the faulty switch can often restore power to the affected outlets

If you’re outlet isn’t working but the breaker isn’t tripped , that could mean a number of things. First, check if it’s a GFCI outlet, which has added protection so your breakers don’t malfunction. If that’s the case, simply hit the outlet's reset button and see if it works. If it doesn’t, or you don’t have a GFCI outlet, you might have a loose outlet or loose wiring, a damaged breaker, or an overloaded circuit, which would require a dedicated breaker. It’s best to consult with an electrician to diagnose the problem accurately.

Burnt outlets can be caused by things such as faulty wiring, loose connections, or a circuit overload—and yes, they are extremely dangerous. If you notice your outlet is hot or has burn marks, you should shut off the power to it from the circuit breaker and immediately call an electrician.

Upgrading your amp service could possibly be a solution to tripped breakers. Circuit breakers in an electrical panel trip as a safety measure when something goes wrong with the current, and that’s often caused by plugged-in devices trying to draw too much current. Replacing the electrical panel with a new model and new breakers designed for higher amps can fix this problem.

You can run a small or basic standard-size refrigerator on a 15-amp circuit. But you should plug a modern, standard-size refrigerator into a 20-amp dedicated circuit. The refrigerator needs to be on a dedicated circuit, meaning it is the only appliance and outlet on that circuit breaker. This method prevents tripping the breaker and reduces the chance of an electrical fire
