Fire doors are constructed to have certain resistance levels regarding fire. A traditional door can typically resist fire for less than one minute, whereas fire doors can resist it for 30 to 120 minutes, depending on the fire door rating. Traditional double doors are usually solid wood or mostly wood with a small amount of glass, whereas French doors are primarily glass panels with wood, aluminum, or plastic framing. Double doors are often larger than French doors, and do not allow as much light into the home when installed as exterior doors.

Depending on the type of French doors you choose, they may be more expensive than sliding doors. Generally speaking, a single in-swing or out-swing French door will cost less than a sliding door, as it contains fewer materials and is easier to install. However, sliding doors usually have a slightly lower price tag, especially when compared to the standard double in-swing or double out-swing French doors.

Kick plates are usually installed on the “push” side of a door, but there are plenty of reasons to install them on both sides. Interior kick plates can offer protection from pet scratches, doors being kicked closed, and even kids’ toys during enthusiastic play sessions. Consider what kind of use and abuse your door gets to determine which side or sides to install a kick plate on.

You don’t need to shim both sides of a door, but it’s always a good idea. Wall framing is rarely perfectly plumb, and shims let you make minor adjustments to get your door perfectly level and plumb. This will ensure the door swings open and closes smoothly. You can also use shims on both sides of the door you’re installing or adjusting to center it in the wall opening.
