"Jeff was very responsive, from the first call to the last nail. He came quickly to look at what we needed, e-mailed me an estimate later that day. Our timing was perfect; he had just completed a job and was waiting on starting the next, and we were ready to have our work done. I let him know the job was his and he came with his crew the next morning. It was done the following day. The area in which they worked is as clear as if they'd never been there. We were on the fence as to whether it made sense to repair/reside the shed or just replace it. In the end, we're very glad we did, and clearly chose the right contractor to do the job."

"Excellent! Alta Renovations did my bathroom from the studs out. Tile, sheetrock, floor, vanity and the plumbing and towel hardware. The job was was in a co-op, with very frustrating "rules" and "requirements ". Most contractors would not want to participate (paperwork, time schedules and parking restrictions). Jose, the owner of Alta, abided by all the rules, whiles still keeping a smile!!! His workers worked neatly and orderly, knew exactly what had to be done, and did it. Very pleased. I'm recommending him to all my ? ? ? ? ?"

"Joe did a fantastic job rebuilding a closet in my brothers house. As well as building a new wall in my home. His work is high quality and his price is very reasonable by comparison to other contractors out there. Cleans up extremely well afterwards also. Highly recommend"

"After having used many contractors and have done many projects on my home I can honestly say Homecraft was the best company I have worked with. They built an extension with a master bath and I could not be happier, it came out great. The workmanship was superb and the workers so very considerate and they all treated my house as if it was their own. From help designing and picking out materials to the job itself what a pleasure. I highly recommend them."

"I used these guys for a remodeling job which included bathroom renovation, some minor electrical work, knocking down and installing new dry wall and painting. Class acts! We all hear horror stories about contractors not calling you back or not showing up on time or showing up at all. Not these guys! Hector, Moises and their crew really did exactly what they said they were going to do. Friendly, responsive and oh yea, solid work! Professional through and through! Highly recommend them and would use them again!"

Small jobs welcome

"This contractor was prompt and on time, with a great attitude. His crew was efficient and clean, and completed the job on schedule. The pictures show unpainted wood because it needs time to sit out, but the contractor will be back to paint and do additional work in September. I would highly recommend them!"

"Project took a lot longer then expected. The quality of the work is top notch. So overall I'll take quality over speed any day. The workers are great and easy to work with. Any Sub-contractors that were used were also great and easy to work with. Both bathrooms Came out great!"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.
