Return air ducts shouldn't be installed in closets, bathrooms, garages, kitchens, boiler rooms, furnace rooms, and attics. Kitchens can have return ducts if they only serve that kitchen and are at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances. Similarly, return ducts can only be installed in garages if they're part of a forced-air system that only serves the garage.

If adjusting your dampers is not giving you the performance you want, such as a reduction in energy bills, you may want to consider the cost to reroute ductwork. You may have a poorly designed system that doesn’t meet your home’s needs. If you added on to the home, for example, this could explain the need to add or reroute some ductwork to help the dampers work better.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

If you’ve kept on top of those filters and still notice a rapid accumulation of dirt, it could indicate that the ductwork requires a thorough cleaning. It’s also probably time to schedule that HVAC system inspection.

The time it takes to clean your AC unit depends on factors such as its size, the level of dirt buildup, and the thoroughness of the cleaning process. A basic cleaning can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, while a more detailed cleaning involving disassembly and deep cleaning may take a few hours. Make sure you allocate enough time to ensure all components are properly cleaned for optimal efficiency and longevity of your AC unit.
