Issues that warrant cleaning include poor airflow, reduced energy efficiency, and odd odors or noises emanating from the ducts. Of course, regularly cleaning air ducts will only improve their performance and ensure no sudden issues arise. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning air ducts every three to eight years for efficiency and durability.

It is common for mold to grow around air vents, especially in areas with high humidity or moisture problems. These vents provide a perfect environment for mold to thrive due to the condensation caused by the meeting of warm and cool air. Mold growth can be accelerated by the presence of dust and debris around the vents. Regular maintenance, proper ventilation, and addressing any water leaks or excess humidity can prevent the growth of mold around air vents.

Higher energy bills, excessive dust, and uneven temperature are all signs of bad ductwork or air leaks. If you have air quality sensors, you will see a drop in your home’s air quality if your ducts are leaking. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to schedule an inspection.

Dirty air filters are the likely culprit. You should swap them out every month or at least every quarter. If you’ve kept on top of those filters and still notice a rapid accumulation of dirt, it could indicate that the ductwork requires a thorough cleaning. It’s also probably time to schedule that HVAC system inspection.

To get water out of AC vents, first identify the source of the water. Check other air vents in your home for signs of moisture. If you can’t find any, look around the room for anything that might have seeped water in like an overwatered plant or a spill. Meanwhile, if you notice more than one air vent wet in other areas of your home, it’s more than likely an issue with your insulation, roof, or air conditioner. Start by hiring an HVAC technician who can trace the source of the leak for you.
