"review for Bob Deyo We had  a 120 year old silver maple tree in our backyard that was growing really close to our house.  We wanted to figure out if we should prune it back or take down the tree entirely. A person at Cornell recommended Deyo's Tree Service to us. We got several quotes from different companies, and we were so impressed with Bob's experience and knowledge. Of all the companies we contacted, Bob was the only one who insisted that our tree had to come down because it was dangerous for us. Well, a few days later, we hired a certified arborist and he said that the tree couldn't be saved and should be taken down for safety reasons. We are so grateful that Bob insisted that we take the tree down. Other companies were trying to save the tree, but if we had listened to them, we would have put our lives at risk! We are so thankful that we had Bob's expertise.Â"

"Iâ ve dealt with other local tree services, and Erikâ s is the only one Iâ ll use again. Heâ s highly skilled, totally reliable, fair in his pricing, and he went out of his way to get the job done quickly to accommodate my schedule. Erik was professional, very personable, and generous in sharing his knowledge and experience. Iâ ve already recommended him to friends and relatives who need help with their trees."

"Ryan and his team were really fast, efficient and careful! Very professional. They got the job done perfectly! The willow tree that was half fallen had been leaning dangerously over the flower garden and onto my prize flowering magnolia tree. They took great care of the magnolia and the rest of the garden and cleaned up all the debris. Thanks guys for a fabulous job and a reasonable price!"

"Michaelâ s Logging came through in a pickle situation. We had part of an old huge sugar maple fall onto our property. Much of the tree that was still standing was compromised and in danger of falling onto the house. We called Michaelâ s Loggjng and they were able to arrive the very same day of the estimate to remove the tree. They worked a total of 8 hours, carefully cutting the high limbs using a cherry picker bucket. They protected the lawn, carefully mulched, seeded when they were finished. They left requested firewood and hauled the rest. Friendly service as well. We recommend Michaelâ s Logging for your tree removal."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

It can be bad to leave a dead stump in the ground. A stump becomes a hefty piece of dead wood in time and eventually (especially with the help of rain) starts to rot. That makes it a locus point for diseases and pesky insects, as well as a bit of an eyesore. It’s best to remove a tree stump completely before it starts to decay, especially before it starts to fall apart. If the tree was removed because of disease, it’s even more important to fully remove the stump if possible.

For safety reasons, leaning trees are best removed by a professional, as they may often tear away from the hinge, causing you to lose control over where the tree falls. If you choose to cut down a tree leaning slightly, avoid cutting off root protrusions before you start. Make your hinge a little longer than usual by cutting it deeper (up to 30% of the diameter) and applying a wedge into the felling cut on the side the tree is leaning. Stand away from the direction the tree leans while making your felling cut.

Trees don’t usually grow back after being cut down. Some particularly robust tree species may start sending up new stems from a stump to recover, but those stems won’t become a “tree” like before. Generally, trees don’t recover from being entirely cut down, which is why it’s important to be careful when making a decision. When you cut down a tree, it’s a good idea to make plans to remove the stump, even if it’s unlikely to grow back.

Yes, carefully prune back dead branches—don’t wait for pruning season. This helps keep your maple tree healthy and also helps prevent large branches from falling unexpectedly. Don’t seal the cut branch—trees can naturally take care of these wounds—but be sure to remove any source of fungus or pest infestation to help save the tree.

If you want to take your tree-planting hobby beyond your outdoor space, here are a few great ways to do it:

  • Encourage your neighbors to participate in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which has a four-step framework that helps communities grow and maintain their own tree cover.

  • Support businesses that plant trees.

  • Lobby your local government to plant more trees around your community.

  • Donate to a tree-planting charity.
