"Excellent service. Same day, efficient, totally professional. It could have been a big problem in older brownstone (or "can of worms," as electrician said) but he was able to rewire the outlet so that it's essentially new. He told us that running a new line (thus bypassing outlet) wouldn't have solved the problem, since the older wiring would still be carrying energy even if unused. He knew what he was doing. My landlady paid, so I don't know how much it cost, but she was happy. Wanted them to get a good review."

"David is an amazing electrician. He is timely & reliable. I have referred him to numerous family and friends including my boss. All of them have been happy. He works on ethics and does not overcharge for the job like most. He is an electrical wiz & just a blessing to have in your corner when you’re experiencing a tough electrical issue or wanting to add something new to your home. He is a must hire on my list. You will not regret it."

Small jobs welcome

"I usually don't write reviews but in this case, I had to make an exception. Luis was nothing but amazing. I wanted to install a washer dryer in my home and he was able to come to my house on a weekend and analyze how it would be installed. My main concern was the electric setup. I wanted to see if it was actually possible to install a washer dryer given the certain voltage it needs to work. He explained everything in detail and provided some suggestions of what he thought would be best. With me, its all about tone and Luis was nice of enough to go thru everything with us very thoroughly and he would make time that fit our busy schedule. His rates are amazing compared to others and is willing to work with you. I am glad he was the one I chose out of the others that reached out to me for this project and I would use him 10000% for all my electric needs and recommend him to others that are in need of electric assistance. I actually have another project that I have to do and will use him without a question. If you need a great electrician, reach out to Luis and Thunderbolt Electric. He has a lot of experience and will get the job done."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).

How far you can run underground electric depends on the wire gauge (generally AWG) and the circuit voltage. Too much voltage drop in an electrical circuit can negatively affect performance, so the smaller the voltage drop, the better. Ideally, it shouldn't exceed 3%. The smaller the wire and the longer the run, the more significant the voltage drop.

For example, with a 120-volt circuit, you can run 60 feet of 12 AWG cable without losing more than 3% voltage. With a 240-volt circuit, you can run 120 feet of 12 AWG wire while maintaining a voltage drop of 3% or less.

No, wiring does not need to be redone to get a dimmer switch, as they work with single-pole and three-way switches. Just ensure you choose a dimmer that is compatible with your wiring, fixture, and lightbulbs. Most homes built after 1985 have neutral wiring and work with almost all dimmers. If your home was built before 1985 and you don’t have an updated electrical system, you may have to use a non-neutral wiring dimmer.

Electric water heaters use a high amount of electricity, so they’re best for homeowners who subsidize their electric bill with solar or who live in an area with inexpensive electricity. For others, gas water heaters versus electric water heaters may be the more cost-effective solution, with the added bonus of heating water quickly and efficiently. No matter which you choose, you can lower your water temperature as low as possible to keep costs down.

When removing an old security alarm system, you likely won't need to remove any of the wiring. Wiring can either be left in place for a replacement system or capped off for safety and pushed into the wall. If you're uncomfortable with the wiring, or if it's badly damaged, contact a professional electrician for assistance with safe removal.
