"I would recommend Mr. Paul of TPaul Electric to anyone in need of a knowledgeable, skilled electrician. He replaced an outlet for me (on a holiday!). He was punctual and courteous. The job was done expertly. He explained everything in layman terms so that I could understand. He was quick and cleaned up after himself. I am very satisfied with his work and will call him again for any electrical need."

"Home owner in Hollis, NY Among other electrical jobs, David installed outlets in my home. I found him to be quite knowledgeable, skillful, and professional. He was punctual in his arrival on the job and he completed the job in a timely manner. He made sure his work followed “code” and left me with a safe, well done job. "My experience with PK and Altman Electric was excellent. From my initial contact with Elizabeth in the main office to the service that was provided by Raphael and Omar, the staff was professional, polite, and punctual. I called on a Tuesday, and Elizabeth scheduled me in for Wednesday! And Raphael and Omar arrived an hour early. Before starting, Raphael reviewed a TO DO LIST with me. A ceiling fan and two outlets, including a GFI and light fixture, were either replaced or serviced. Pricing is competitive. Very pleased and would highly recommend."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

If you need to run a wire from the meter to the breaker box, start by turning off the power using the main switch to avoid injury risks from live wires. Then, locate the ground wire from your meter and connect it to the ground bar of the breaker box. Connect the neutral wire using the same method to improve your circuit efficiency.

Next, locate the hot wires running from the main switch to the meter. To connect them to the correct terminals from meter to breaker, unscrew the nuts of the breaker hotwire terminals, insert the positive hotwire, and ensure it’s firmly attached. Finally, secure the wires with electrical tape and wire tie cables before re-securing your breaker box. Keep in mind that this process can be dangerous, so don’t hesitate to hire a local electrician.

A piggyback circuit breaker, also known as a tandem or double-stuff breaker, combines two separate circuits into a single slot in a breaker panel. This design allows adding more circuits without a larger panel, making it a space-saving solution. Each breaker in the piggyback unit operates independently, protecting two circuits in one standard breaker slot. This is especially useful in older panels with limited space for additional breakers.

A ceiling light will usually have two or three wires: black, white, and sometimes green. Black wires are positive, or hot, while white wires are negative, or neutral. The green wire is the grounding wire.

When you’re wiring the light, connect black to black, white to white, and green to the grounding screw.

There are various reasons why an electrical outlet can stop working. You might have to do some detective work to understand whether it’s a problem with the attached appliance, the outlet itself, or a faulty breaker. Sometimes, old age or loose wiring are to blame; other times, it can be as simple as an overloaded circuit tripping the system and cutting power. If you’re troubleshooting doesn’t solve the mystery or repairs, or replacements are required, it’s time to call in the pros.

In many cases, yes, upgrading your electrical panel can lower your electric bill. Upgrading an outdated electrical panel can make your home more energy-efficient, so you consume less electricity and spend less on utility bills. However, to see these savings, you’ll need to invest quite a bit. On average, installing a new electrical panel costs $1,200 to $2,000, with most people paying around $1,600.
