"We were looking for a contractor who would share my wifes “expensive” design taste and ideas and who also had knowledge of the latest trends. Once we found Shawn and his crew we were blown away and when you see the pictures that I upload there will be no questions as to why. Its so difficult to find someone that you can trust with your project from start to finish but we have found that in east end design and now consider him abd his crew friends. The one thing that I tell people is that he is the type of contractor that never says “that can’t be done”. He always finds a way to meet the demand and exceed expectations in any project. Oh yea, and we gave him 2 weeks as a deadline for our opening and he delivered!!"

"Jose and his team were extremely professional, highly knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful throughout the entire project. He provided a fair price without compromising on quality, and his attention to detail was amazing. The final result came out even better than I expected! One of the things I appreciated most was how clean and organized they were. They always kept the work area neat, taking extra care to minimize dust and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the house. I would absolutely hire him again and highly recommend Jose to anyone looking for a skilled, reliable, and detail-oriented contractor. A true professional!"

Small jobs welcome

"We couldn’t be happier with the work on our new deck and deck frame. From the very beginning, the team was professional, communicative, and incredibly easy to work with. The quality of the craftsmanship exceeded our expectations, and it’s obvious they take great pride in their work. What really stood out was their willingness to collaborate throughout the project. As we made changes to the design along the way, they were flexible, offered thoughtful suggestions, and adapted without hesitation. Their pricing was also very competitive, providing exceptional value for the quality of work they delivered. If you’re looking for a contractor who does outstanding work, communicates well, and genuinely cares about the final result, I would recommend them without hesitation."

"Our experience working with Diane and Dale of Hampton Design and Build was remarkable and we are so thrilled with the job they did! They and their sub-contractors are trustworthy, reliable, honest, hard-working, and a lot of fun to work with. During the bulk of our renovation, we were at our home in New York City and often not around when work was being done. At no time did we feel work wasnâ t getting done because we were not there. Additionally, Dale and Diane checked in frequently and sent us regular reports of progress with pictures. While we originally just hired them to remodel and redesign our kitchen and laundry area, we soon discovered other issues like water and roof leaks that needed to be addressed. Never did we feel taken advantage of with these new developments and in fact, everything was quickly taken care of at a price that fit within our budget. For our kitchen remodel, we first told them we wanted to take out an entire wall that separated our kitchen from the living area. That whole process was done in one day and things quickly progressed from there. We worked closely with Diane on the design of the kitchen and she was able to perfectly take our thoughts, put them on paper, and turn it into our dream kitchenâ ¦ including the largest island we have ever seen! For our floors, we had a lot different flooring going on and they were able to perfectly match and stain all the wood flooring throughout the entire house. No one can tell which was the old floor and which is the new floor! We had a very plain fireplace and wanted to give it more character with a stacked stone. In addition to the excellent job done by the mason, one of Daleâ s sub-contractors built us a beautiful wood mantle that is truly the centerpiece of our home. We decided to change all the doors, hardware and trim throughout the house and Dale had it ordered and delivered in what felt like a day. It has made such a difference in the appearance to our home and while this wasnâ t in our original remodel plan, we are so happy for his guidance and expertise for making it happen. In addition, we had tile stairs leading to the basement that were uneven and a potential trip hazard. Daleâ s crew removed the tile and replaced the stairs with a perfectly aligned wood staircase that looks as if it should have always been there. Once this remodel was done, we soon discovered that our fence had completely rotted out and we had no qualms calling Dale to help us. As per usual, he quickly ordered the materials and got his guys on the job. We have recently had additional projects and we will most likely have more. Rest assured, we will call Hampton Design and Build for everything moving forward!"

"Jimmy was very professional. He helped with every step of the project including suggesting cabinet makers. He measured and ordered the cabinets for me. He was very flexible and responsive throughout the process. Whenever I was not happy with something, he was very responsive and did his best to correct it. I am very happy with the kitchen."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.

Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.
