Is mold in an air conditioner dangerous? Running an air conditioner with mold isn’t safe because it can spread harmful mold spores throughout your home. These spores may cause respiratory problems, allergies, or aggravate asthma in household members and guests. There are several signs that your ducts might be clogged, such as encountering more dust in your home, dirty air vent covers, airflow and temperature changes from room to room, noticeable mold growth, and higher energy bills. If you notice these signs, shine a flashlight down your ducts and inspect for clogs or blockages.

Clean return air vents by using a microfiber cloth soaked in warm, soapy water (or a mild cleaning solution, like vinegar and water). Wipe the interior of the vents, paying close attention to the corners and crevices where dust likes to hide. Use a vacuum brush attachment or handheld model instead of a cloth if desired. Additionally, once or twice a year, remove your air vents and soak them in warm soapy water for 30 minutes before cleaning, drying, and putting them back on.

Dirty air filters are the likely culprit. You should swap them out every month or at least every quarter. If you’ve kept on top of those filters and still notice a rapid accumulation of dirt, it could indicate that the ductwork requires a thorough cleaning. It’s also probably time to schedule that HVAC system inspection.

There are a few things that you can look out for that indicate that you need duct sealing, but the two most critical ones are less comfortable air in your living space and increased utility bills. If you notice that you’re paying more often for HVAC servicing and maintenance, that could suggest that you need duct sealing, as well, as leaks put added strain on your system. You may also notice musty odors in parts of your home, as leaks can lead to condensation on your air ducts that can promote mold growth behind your walls.
