"Everything about this experience spoke of the highest professionalism. Their representative answered my Monday phone inquiry in a timely fashion, and arrived promptly the next day to examine the car and provide an estimate. In all of her communications she was friendly and obviously sincere?and successful?in her determination to perform the best work possible. On Wednesday she arrived first thing in the morning; finished cleaning the interior of our Honda Accord within two hours; and did a splendid job of it.

"I had an excellent experience with Castlton Environmental Contractors, LLC. From start to finish, they made the process smooth and stress-free. Bill and Jennifer handled all the permits and paperwork, which saved me a lot of time and hassle. The work was completed in a timely, efficient, and professional manner, and the crew left everything clean when they were done. "Had the opportunity to experience Lilco's work on several projects. These guys always had a professional attitude and took the time for all preparations and quality control. They did not leave a mess or unwarranted damages like so many fly-by-night contractors tend to do. They even magnet swept driveways for screws/nails whenever they finished loading out for the night. The owner is always up front about any costs, with no hidden charges to get the jobs done."

"I was selling my house in NY and had an underground oil tank that needed to be abandoned properly prior to closing. I hired Optima Environmental to perform the job. The sales rep came out that day and walked down and discussed with me what needed to be done. I was in the process of moving when she came back and I signed the paperwork. I was then informed that a CO had never been obtained for the new oil tank which had been installed 3 years earlier. Working with the Optima Representative (Shelley) and the town, I was able to get the permit's needed and following the job (which was performed in one day, while I had already moved to my new residence in LA) and the inspection by the town I was able to get the CO's required for my closing. All the people I met and dealt with from Optima Environmental were very professional, helpful and courteous. The final project turned out great!!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Hard soil could be a sign of overly dry dirt, either from poor drainage or drought. It's important to test the nutrient levels, density, and drainage capacity of your soil to see if it's absorbing water properly. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture. If you experience a good deal of runoff, you may need to aerate your lawn, apply a wetting agent, or hire a professional for a closer look.

Excavations take a few days or up to a few weeks. The time it takes to excavate an area depends on the size of the area, the type of soil, the type of excavator, and even the time of year, since winter can make digging up the ground more difficult.

A mini excavator can dig between 5 and 11 feet deep, depending on the type and size of the mini excavator. Mini hydraulic excavators are more powerful and can reach deeper into the earth, but electric models have a more limited range. Mini excavators over two tons in size are also more powerful and able to dig as deep as 11 feet.

A walk-behind trencher can cut through roots as long as they’re not too thick, making a project much easier than digging with a shovel and other hand tools. Assess your terrain and the number of trees in the surrounding area to determine if a walk-behind trencher will ease the job. Digging a trench by hand is much more time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.
