Ductwork should be thoroughly cleaned at least every three to five years. An air duct cleaning specialist will need to clean and inspect the ductwork for any leaks or other damage. You can also help keep the air ducts clean by changing out air filters every 30 to 90 days.

The number of return air vents a house should have depends on its overall square footage. You'll need one supply vent and one return vent for every 100 to 150 square feet of living space. This means that, ideally, there should be at least one return air vent in every room. However, if the room is 100 square feet or larger, it's better to have two or three. A 2,000-square-foot home should have between 13 and 20 return air vents, in total.

You can keep your air vents working properly by regularly cleaning them and replacing any air filters as necessary. Your air vents will also work best if you clean and lubricate the exhaust fans and reduce humidity to prevent condensation on them.

You might have heard that closing vents in unused rooms can help with energy efficiency, but it’s never a good idea to block air vents completely. Fully closing vents can create a buildup of pressure inside your ducts, which can lead to leaks, holes, or other problems. Instead, you can shut your vents partially (between 50% and 75%) in unoccupied parts of your home.

Zoned HVAC systems can be worth it for some homeowners, even with the added HVAC replacement costs, because they offer tremendous benefits. Zoned HVAC may offer greater stability and efficiency if your home has multiple levels and experiences constant temperature fluctuations. However, even smaller homes without major fluctuations can benefit since zoned HVAC systems can adjust their temperature more quickly by heating and cooling only the spaces you need.
