"Justin Lippert of Carpenter Brothers Painting Company of Olean, NY and his Assistant did an excellent job painting the outside of our recently purchased 125-year old house. He is cheerful, easy-going, friendly and has a great attitude. He & his ***'t painted the window shutters up on the 2nd floor, above & below the 5-panel Bow window, and the front porch ceiling. No drips. No sloppiness. Clean, precise work. I asked for 2 coats and he did 3! They cleaned up after themselves and left no mess behind. Professional, polite, thorough. Did I mention his quote was the lowest of all?! A true bargain! Thank you Justin! 👍🏠🖌😃☆☆☆☆☆"

"Jamie and Bonnie painted the exterior of our house as specified and on budget. Given the difficult weather conditions the work was completed in a timely manner. They were always courteous and helpful. I would certainly recommend them and plan on contracting again with them."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Staining pressure-treated wood is a recommended practice. While inherently resilient, it's not impervious to moisture and UV exposure. Staining treated wood is feasible and recommended for enhanced protection and longevity. Applying stain and sealant safeguards against degradation, prolonging its life span. These measures shield the wood from environmental threats while augmenting its aesthetic appeal, ensuring your investment endures the test of time.

Yes, you can paint a chain-link fence, but you don’t want to use spray paint. With the spray method, you’ll be losing a majority of your product to the air, given the size of the gaps in chain-link fences. Instead, use a paintbrush for your fence posts and a paint roller for the wire.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.

Staining a fence is less expensive than painting a fence due to the cost of materials and the longevity of the finish. Stain not only lasts longer than paint without chipping or peeling, but you also won’t have to put in the extra time and cost to prime the surface first.
