"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can have a gas line professionally installed to convert your traditional fireplace to natural gas; just know it’ll be an extra cost to budget for. The cost to run a gas line where you don’t already have one is about $540, though most homeowners pay between $260 and $820. Your total could be significantly higher if you don’t already have a main gas line running to your home.

No, there are no ventless pellet stoves. Because pellet stoves burn wood pellets, they produce wood smoke—which contains carbon monoxide. This harmful substance needs to be vented out of your living area. That said, there are vent-free and ventless fireplaces that run on natural gas and propane. These offer the heating and ambiance of a fireplace without the need to vent thick and hazardous wood smoke.

Depending on who’s doing the estimating, about 22,000 to 25,000 chimney fires happen each year in the United States. Given the fact that millions of Americans have fireplaces (and chimneys), that means chimney fires aren’t exactly common—but they’re not rare, either. Since they’re so dangerous, it’s important to take precautions to prevent them.

Fireplaces can theoretically help you save on heating bills if you lower the temperature throughout the rest of your home and heat only a single room that you occupy using the fireplace. However, in most cases, homeowners won’t save any money on heating bills. Gas and electric fireplace inserts could actually lead to a spike in your respective energy bills if you use them frequently, and if you don’t keep up with chimney maintenance and repairs, your traditional masonry fireplace could actually be a source of heat loss in the winter.

Yes, it is possible to convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas. The average cost for this conversion is $3,000, with a typical range of $500 to $5,500. The project involves running a gas line, professionally cleaning the chimney, and installing gas logs.

Cost factors include the type of gas fireplace and whether a new gas line is needed. Installing a natural gas line can add $200 to $1,000 to the cost. Vented gas fireplaces are more expensive, averaging around $5,000, while ventless options are more cost-effective at about $1,500.
