"Water staining appeared below a mini-split line-set cover mounted on the rear wall. The plastic cover had been screwed directly through the siding, and the wall opening around the refrigerant lines was filled with expanding foam and surface caulk. No flashing directed water away from the penetration. An HVAC contractor temporarily released the cover and supported the lines without disconnecting or sharply bending them. The siding crew then removed the surrounding panels and found a narrow area of softened sheathing below the opening. That sheathing was replaced after the wall cavity dried. The weather-resistive barrier was repaired and integrated with a flashed mounting block. A properly sized sleeve protected the lines where they passed through the wall. The line-set cover was remounted to the block rather than the siding panels. Replacement siding was woven into the existing courses. The repair left access for future HVAC service without requiring the siding to be cut again."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

Minor repairs like sealing small leaks or cleaning debris are DIY-friendly, but professional repairs ensure long-term stability and proper drainage.

Yes, many homeowners find that seamless gutters are worth the investment. Although they have a higher upfront cost than standard gutters—an average of $2,700 compared to $2,000—their benefits often outweigh the price difference. Seamless gutters last longer, require less maintenance, and are less prone to clogs and leaks due to having fewer seams. In contrast, standard gutters typically have seams every 10 feet, which can leak and require new sealant every one to five years. Additionally, seamless gutters are considered more aesthetically pleasing, come in a variety of colors to match your home, and can improve your home's curb appeal and potential value.

No—gutters should be designed and properly installed so they are ready to handle any level of rainflow from your roof. If you notice pooling water around your gutters or on the roof, it’s imperative that you contact a gutter repair pro near you—the slope of your gutters could be off and need adjusting.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

While minimal drippage may not be problematic, gutters that are constantly leaking or overflowing indicate damage or improper installation. A rain chain gutter or other ornamental feature may produce more dripping than usual. Likewise, rain dispersal systems may also cause water to sprinkle to the ground. However, if you notice pools of water or flooding around your property, then it’s a good idea to have your gutter system inspected.
