"Excellent work, it fixed the problem (most importantly) of water getting into my basement due to poor drainage around my home. Their entire team was punctual, transparent, and they were very thorough in explaining the options. Also worth mentioning, they did a wonderful job being careful of not damaging my lawn, even with big machines, they were careful and calculated with their work and the end result was stellar. They set clear timelines, achieved them, and fixed the problem with a thoughtful permanent solution."

"Very good experience! Leading up to the job, Luigi periodically kept us informed on scheduling (each day of rain postpones all work for a day, and we had a rainy July). Then, he and his men performed the work, which included installing a new fence, in a very structured way -- section by section over several days. Luigi also suggested and added a couple of creative touches, such as a gently curved walkway (we had planned it as straight, with no design) leading from the driveway to both our front steps and the main walkway (see below). He even accommodated our need for a way to get our dog out to the street multiple times each day, even as access to our two entrances was ever-changing. The finished product looks outstanding, and has really enhanced our home and property."

"I have a ½ acre property that was very overgrown. There were areas that required complete clean up and a lot of brush removal. Charles and his crew arrived as scheduled and got right to work. Gardens were cleaned and mulched, shrubs and bushes were trimmed. They brought a backhoe in to clear the really tough areas. The driveway and walkways were edged and cleaned. When they were done, the only sign that they were there was the yard was cleaned. They are a great group of guys, thoughtful and respectful and hard working, I highly recommend them and I would use them again."

"They worked with me to be sure everything was prepared prior to the sealing. It was efficient and very, very reasonable. Great job where they carefully applied the sealer to the driveway without getting it on the cobblestones on the driveway. Highly recommended."

"This is my second project working with Jakob. He is a pleasure to work with as usual. His crews completed the whole job in 3 days, and my new driveway and walkway came out beautiful. It was well worth the long wait. Jakob also sent his crew back for a minor imperfection I noticed. He is now my go-to contractor for any future works."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.
