Small jobs welcome

"Salamanca Tree and Landscaping Corp. are skilled professionals that I can highly recommend -- and already has. The crew was focused and efficient. I am VERY pleased with the job they did. It was fascinating to watch them dismantle gigantic trees so proficiently. They were quick, friendly and cleaned up so well that you'd never know they were there. They are experts at what they do. I shopped around and compared prices and can say with confidence that their rate was very reasonable. I'm glad they responded to my request."

"Excellent and efficient team. JC Trees came and gave an estimate and were ready to do the job the next Day. I had to wait til the next week because i was going out of town, but my job was done when I came back and within a week of me posting on Home Advisor. And, it was not an easy job - i wish I took a video. Iâ m still waiting for Urban Arborists to call me back to schedule an estimate appointment! Forget them. Go with JC Trees!"

"I had a roughly 50+ year-old 3 story tree that finally needed to be cut down due to termite and other possible insect infestation. We looked up Angie's List and L.A. Tree Expert responded to our need. They came a few days earlier to assess the situation and gave us an estimate. They told us how the gameplan would down, what to do and how to prepare. We were impressed by their manpower, equipment, and professionalism. On Sat, November 7, they showed up and started early and on time, and we were greatly impressed with the speed and accuracy of how they did their job without damaging any surrounding property. Keep in mind, my 3 story high tree was located in my backyard, so it was definitely not easy to get to, but they managed to get the job done and in a very timely fashioned manner. We thought this kind of work would take over 6 hours, but this company managed to complete their work in just about 4 1/2 hours, and also cleaned up after themselves. The price was very reasonable, communication was also very good, and they were honest from start to finish. Although I have nothing left for them to continue the use of their services, I would strongly recommend anyone to seek them out if you need tree pruning or tree removal. They do go by other different names such as L.A. Tree Service, but in either case, it was a pleasure finding a Licensed Tree Cutting Services company that is honest, won't rip you off on a quote (unlike other tree cutting companies I have contacted thruout the years) and knows how to get the job done without hassle."

"Freeport were the best of the 3 tree services I have hired in the past 15 years. Their price was 70% less than the highest competitor. They arrived on time. It was a difficult and delicate job as the hugh tree was touching the house. Last but not least Rene is a personable gentleman."

"LA Tree Service called me and came out to give an estimate the next day. They were quick, professional, and very reasonable. A crew of six men came to remove a very large tree from my backyard. They hauled everything out and cleaned up nicely. I would definitely use this company again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

The best tools for tree removal include a chainsaw for large trees, an ax for notching and cutting down small trees, and a wedge to help control the direction a tree falls in. A hatchet can be useful for very small trees, but won’t be effective for medium to large trees.

It’s not as common for Dutch elm disease to affect other types of trees, especially if the surrounding trees aren’t elms. However, it is possible for DED to spread to other trees, particularly in northern states, like Minnesota. In fact, it’s a good idea to use geography to identify wood and determine which types of trees are in your yard.

Unfortunately, the complex and shallow root system of elm trees makes surrounding elm trees particularly vulnerable to DED. Early discovery is key!

In most cases, you should not use a pruning seal on trees after trimming. Applying a sealant can interfere with the tree's natural healing process, and it does not guarantee protection from pathogens. Instead of sealing the cut, the best practice is to support the tree's natural recovery by providing it with plenty of water and a dormant-style fertilizer. However, there are exceptions. Pruning seals may be recommended for very vulnerable species, like elm trees, in areas where dangerous diseases such as Dutch elm disease are prevalent. In these specific situations, the protection offered by a sealant can outweigh its downsides. For advice tailored to your situation, especially after cutting large branches, it is best to consult a local tree trimming professional.

Tree removal can be quite expensive, especially for larger projects, but you can use the following tips to help keep costs down:

  • Do the yard cleanup afterward yourself

  • Choose to leave the logs on your property and split them yourself

  • Opt to leave the stump in the ground and tackle stump grinding yourself

  • Pull permits for tree removal, if necessary, to avoid fines

  • Pay to have multiple trees removed at once

  • Remove tree in the late winter or early spring during off-season
