Customers say: True professional

"Arthur gave us a fair and competitive estimate and was able to start work quickly thereafter. He and his team did an excellent job gutting and totally remodeling two bathrooms and a closet as well as redoing some of the wood flooring, moving vents, and moving hallways. Arthur himself was at the home everyday and did the important work himself. He also went the extra mile in helping us with small projects around the major project as they came up. He was extremely responsive in provided us with timely updates. When complications occurred (due to the house having not been renovated in 40 years) he was clear and helpful in keeping the project on schedule. He was extremely honest and I trusted him to be alone in my house for weeks on end with his team. I would/plan to work with Arthur again in the future for my home renovation projects."

"I have used HomeWork for several different projects in the last two years including a full bathroom restoration, a pergola restoration, a custom stair banister and a custom fireplace surround. The owner Steve Kaplan is very professional, always friendly and reasonable. He staffs each project with a team of highly skilled professionals with the right skillset for the specific project and his prices are competitive when compared to others. I highly recommend Steve and his team."

High end architect specializing in making a house feel like home!\nI make people’s dream homes a reality. There is nothing more satisfying to me then improving the quality of life for my clients and giving them a house that they are able to make into their homes.\nI have been a licensed architect since 2015 and am currently registered in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maine and Massachusetts. With my NCARB certificate I am able, if necessary, to obtain reciprocal licensure throughout the country in a short time period. \n\nI am inspired by our local built environment, humble materials, classical building forms and traditional building details. I have a strong interest in the reinterpretation of classical building forms, blended with contemporary open floor plans. \nI have a stronger interest in helping to guide my clients to ways of improving the quality of their lives through adapting the built environment to meet their needs.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

For Long Island projects, use concrete rated at least 4,000 PSI with air entrainment for freeze-thaw protection, and epoxy-coated rebar to guard against coastal corrosion. Opt for hot-dip galvanized steel near the shoreline and hurricane-rated connectors for framing. Engineered lumber and waterproof membranes are essential for high water tables. Always confirm your materials meet local climate demands and building code standards.

Helpful?

For a smooth project in Long Island, start by reviewing local building codes, zoning, and flood zone requirements. Assemble a team that includes a structural engineer, architect, and skilled contractor. Apply for permits using detailed engineered drawings, and plan work outside hurricane season to avoid weather delays. Mark underground utilities before excavation, communicate with neighbors, and document progress with photos and inspection records for future reference.

Helpful?

After finishing structural engineering work in Long Island, promptly schedule a final inspection with your local building department and submit all necessary completion paperwork within 90 days. Update your homeowner’s insurance to reflect the improvements and store all permits, drawings, and inspection reports together. For coastal properties, arrange a wind resistance check after storm season and monitor for foundation settlement, especially in areas with clay-rich soil.

Helpful?

In Long Island, structural engineering upgrades—such as foundation reinforcement or hurricane-resistant features—can significantly boost your home’s value and attract buyers. Homes with documented wind and flood resistance often command higher prices. Energy-efficient improvements add further appeal. Keep all engineering reports, permits, and warranties organized, as these reassure buyers and may help you secure lower insurance premiums, making your property more marketable.

Helpful?

In Long Island, begin spring by checking your foundation for cracks caused by freeze-thaw cycles. During summer, review hurricane preparedness by inspecting roof ties and deck fasteners. In fall, look for storm or water damage and examine chimney supports. Winter requires monitoring snow loads and watching for ice dams. For homes near the coast, quarterly inspections help catch salt air corrosion and storm-related issues early.
