"Better than I hoped for. First storm in new house was over 20 inches. Driveway is extremely steep. Cleared garage doors, did not plow in anything I had already shoveled, and everything was cleaned to the blacktop. They would have cleared my walkways, but I opted out of that. Great feeling knowing that next storm I have nothing to report about."

"Handy Carpentry was referred to me by Angie’s list. I contacted the company and arranged for Nixon to come to review the work needed. Heavy wooden double folding closet doors had come off the track because hardware had broken through the wood. He said he could fix the problem. Nixon came back on schedule and the work was completed using the existing hardware. The doors were set back into the track. I was very pleased to have them working just as they did before the problem occurred. I would use Economy Handy Carpentry again and am glad to give them a “job well done” recommendation. M.P. "We had a very difficult to find leak which caused water damage to our garage. Tom found and replaced our rotten garage header and replaced flashing, siding and sealed. The leak was persistent and extremely hard to trace. Tom returned repeatedly until the problem was solved and only charged us for materials: no charge for the additional hours of labor. Tom stands behind his work and is extremely knowledgable. Highly recommend."

"It was excellent. It's A plus. He was very friendly, very forthcoming with what we could do to maintain what he made, very relaxed and he got everything done in a day and a half which was great. I compared with them with other painting companies and the price was very reasonable."

"My husband explained to Alan from Westside what we wanted done. Alan explained the best way to do the project. He was very impressed  with his knowledge of the various projects we proposed. Alan got back with a competitive and fair price. The workers who arrived were the most courteous, skilled and hard working crew my husband has seen in a while. They went above and beyond professional thru and thru. The best compliment you could give a company is to have them return to do additional jobs. Suffice to say Alan is stopping by for another consultation for the next project lined up. Thanks again Westside."

Pole Barn Builders FAQs, answered by experts

Tiny houses, often called tiny homes, need between 100 to 400 square feet, with the most common size being between 200 and 300 square feet. Tiny houses more than 400 square feet venture into apartment-size dwellings and may be considered more of a traditional house than a tiny home. The number of occupants, desired lifestyle, and furniture will all be major factors that determine the desired tiny house size.

The most significant expense when building a barndominium is constructing the metal shell, which includes the roof, doors, and windows. Additional exterior components impacting the overall cost include metal siding and the concrete foundation.

You can use a variety of wood to build a barn door, but the most common options include 1-by boards and 2-by boards for the backing and the decorative boards on the front of the door. Softwoods like pine will save you some money and should hold up well, while hardwoods like maple and oak will stand up to more wear and tear. You could also build the backer out of plywood to minimize the cuts you need to make. Whatever you decide on, make sure the width of the wood is compatible with the mounting brackets you buy.

It is recommended that you check with your local building official on barn building requirements and rules, since size restrictions vary greatly from region to region based on what your property is zoned for. Some cities limit barn construction depending on if your property is residential or commercial. The three main factors your building commission will evaluate are:

  • Height and lot coverage: How tall your barn is and how much of your total property it occupies

  • Setback: Distance between barn and property line

  • Easement: Legal right for another owner to access another’s property

A simple A-frame chicken coop can take as little as three hours to build, but a more substantial all-in-one coop to house a large flock can take four or five days to build. Consult a local handyperson or custom coop builder for a time estimate based on the specific details of your project.
