"Jose & his men were excellent in every way. They repaired watered stained ceiling perfectly. Had a bedroom completely painted… again they did an outstanding job. In addition to sealing & staining the deck, jose also fixed the shed door & mailbox post. Such professionals & so pleasant to work with. I cannot praise the JLL Company enough. Would definitely hire Jose again."

"I will preface my review by saying that Jo and "Floors, Decor and More" was referred to me by a client who had used their services that was quite satisfied with the company's service. But that level of satisfaction is far from what I experienced during my time working with Jo and her team to remodel my kitchen. From start to finish the word I can best use to describe FDM's operation is unprofessional. Because the company and the designer came highly recommended I did not do my research and vet them the way I would have had I not had a personal referral. I have since looked at the reviews online and I can say they are spot on. The reviews of FDM are an eclectic mix of 5 star and 1 star reviews and they are consistent. If you look at the negative reviews, the recurring themes are unprofessionalism and attitude. To be clear, FDM is a general contractor. Nothing more, nothing less. Jo comes up with some basic design ideas, but her only real service is remodeling. For actually planning the kitchen she brought in an outside consultant that did the actual layout and sketches - the only thing she really managed were the subcontractors. On that note I will say that a project that two other quoting contractors said should take between 3-7 weeks to complete she dragged into a 5 month ordeal. Her contractors left a complete mess and had to be watched as they preferred to cut corners and leave poorly completed or incomplete tasks. The place that FDM really failed though was in their owner's attitude. If you annoy her in the least she has zero restraint and will escalate to yelling at you and belittling you in a heartbeat. Her subcontractors do not maintain a clean work area and their work is mediocre at best (certainly not commensurate with what she charges). One of her contractors destroyed $1500 in backsplash marble tiles by laying them improperly because he was in a rush; and another plumbing contractor connected a kick panel heater to a residential fresh water line instead of tying it into the heating loop (something she has failed to take responsibility for and that I needed to pay another contractor to correct). FDM has displayed very questionable management, contractors, and finished product. The best I can say is to stay far, far away. Long Island has no shortage of very qualified and capable home improvement contractors - Jo and Floors, Decor, and More are not among them."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Regular sealing, repainting, and checking for wood rot or pest infestations help maintain longevity.

Yes, professionals offer various roofing materials, including shingles and metal, to match home aesthetics.

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.

Pole barns and carports are similar in that they rely on posts for support and are often not connected to a primary structure. The main difference between the two is that pole barns usually include walls that surround the entire perimeter of the structure, while carports generally remain open on three or four sides. It’s possible to insulate garage doors and even exterior walls on pole barns to create a comfortable workspace, and it’s a bit more secure for storage purposes. However, carports are more affordable.

The best lumber for building will be the strongest and most eco-friendly wood your budget allows. That being said, Douglas fir, pine, oak, and maple are all common building materials. Contractors will use a strong, inexpensive wood to frame a house or other structure and finer woods like mahogany for detail work.
