Quartz is more durable than granite, so it should last longer. However, it does have one weakness: It can be damaged by extreme heat, so exercise caution with cooking pans. In contrast, epoxy countertops cost $50 to $150 per square foot to install. The material costs for epoxy are significantly lower than granite, but installation costs can be higher. Rather than simply cutting granite countertops to size before installation, your contractor will need to carefully pour the epoxy over an existing surface.

It is not recommended to put a hot pan directly on a marble countertop. While marble is heat-resistant, it’s not completely heat-proof. Extreme or prolonged exposure to high heat can cause damage to the marble, such as discoloration, cracking, or even the breaking or chipping of the stone's surface. To protect your marble countertop from potential heat damage, it’s important to use trivets, hot pads, or other heat-resistant surfaces under hot pans or pots. This precaution will help maintain the beauty and integrity of your marble countertop for the long run.

There are three main downsides to quartzite: the cost, the porosity, and the weight. As a natural stone, there’s a level of scarcity that can drive up the price of certain types of quartzite. Even more common varieties are less affordable than synthetic materials like laminate and other natural stones like granite. 

You’ll also have to reseal your quartzite countertop annually to combat the natural porosity and reinforce your cabinets to account for the added weight.

Countertop seating areas generally need at least 12 inches of overhang. However, a 10-inch overhang may be enough if you have a bar-height countertop or use small stools. Small kitchens may not have enough square footage to comfortably accommodate a 12-inch overhang, so a 10- or 11-inch one may be necessary.
