"We used My town Handyman from December 2013 through February 2014 and they were great. Cleanups were thorough - the best ever. They were here four times and it was $325 each time. We have no complaints. It was done well enough we could not have asked for a better service. They cleared the sidewalk, driveway, walkway in front of the house and porch steps. Their prices are reasonable, they're not cheap and not expensive. Great customer service and high quality work with attention to details. Last time we had to request "no salt," and Serge returned our call promptly. They do not do snow plow but they do both snow removal using snow blowers and hand shoveling which is very hard to find. Serge is a man of his word, and we appreciate his fine work ethic. They were prompt and did everything that had been expected. I wish every company was as good as they are - they do an amazing job. You may find cheaper quotes for snow removing - but the quality will be nowhere near My Town Handyman, LLC. A definite call again! We would highly recommend them."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.

Asphalt edging secures the sides of your driveway to prevent crumbling and cracking over time. Most driveways have edges with a 45-degree grading. This helps transfer some of the stress from the asphalt to the ground underneath. If your driveway doesn’t have proper edging, the pressure from your car may break down the edges over time.

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.

Gravel is one of the few driveway materials that can handle rain the second it’s installed. Unlike asphalt, which needs days to set, or concrete, which requires weeks to cure, gravel is ready as soon as it’s compacted. It’s naturally permeable, allowing water to drain straight through—with no risk of pooling or surface damage. Gravel driveways are one of the most affordable, at $1 to $3 per square foot, and can also last upward of 100 years.

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.
