"I met with Miguel from Two Climbing Tree Service on Saturday to receive a quote. The appointment was scheduled for 10AM, but he showed up at 9:40 (which impressed me as I appreciate punctuality). He gave a very competitive quote and hired them. He showed up yesterday to remove four trees, three were mature (2 oaks and a hickory), grind the stumps and prune one other tree. Miguel and his team of 4 started work at 8AM and worked straight through until 4PM with no breaks, even in 90+ degree heat! They did a great job taking down the trees, grinding the stumps and cleaning up. They worked very hard and were a pleasure to deal with. Although the terms tree trimming and tree pruning are used interchangeably, they are very different types of tree maintenance. Tree pruning helps keep your trees disease-free. This process removes unhealthy growths, dead branches, and other unhealthy parts of the tree. It’s more common for deciduous and ornamental trees but not so common for evergreen trees. To determine which method you need, discuss it with a tree trimming specialist.

A standard tree removal doesn’t include stump grinding. If you want your contractor to remove your tree and grind the stump, you must pay an extra charge. That said, you’ll likely save on the cost of stand-alone service—especially if it’s a small tree and they can finish both jobs in a single trip.

Since summer is a busy time for tree companies, the cheapest time of year to remove a tree is during the winter. February and March are typically the prime time to hire a tree removal pro, and some homeowners living in colder climates can save around 20% off services. It depends on location and the company, but you can always shop around for the best deal.

After a big storm, you may not be sure if a tree was struck or not. Look for the telltale long scars, like strips or gouges in the bark of the tree, running in sometimes jagged lines down the length of the trunk. These scars will often show vulnerable living wood inside the tree. It’s also common to see scorched or wilted leaves on the side or top of the tree where lightning struck.

Some fast-acting products can rot a tree stump in four to six weeks. Keep in mind, these products contain harsh chemicals that may prevent regrowth in the area. Other products, like fertilizer that contains lots of nitrogen, can enhance the process and rot a stump in about a year. (This is compared to the ten years it can take naturally for a stump to rot.)
