"For almost a year, we assumed the dark patch in our attic was caused by a roof leak. NY Roofing found that an upstairs bathroom fan was exhausting directly into the attic, creating moisture near the underside of the roof deck. The shingles were also near the end of their service life, but they were careful to distinguish the ventilation problem from rain entering through the roof. We could have corrected the bathroom exhaust and continued monitoring the older shingles. We ultimately chose replacement because of their age, widespread granule loss, and cracking along the sunny slope.
