To tell if a window is single or double-pane, focus on the edge. Double-pane windows have two glass layers separated by a spacer, which you can usually see around the edges. For single-pane windows, it’s just one sheet of glass. Another easy trick: shine a light at the window—single-pane glass reflects once, while double-pane glass reflects twice. There is no blanket number when it comes to glass thickness for soundproofing. Thicker glass does help reduce noise, but it’s only part of the solution. Most single-pane windows use glass that’s ⅛” to ¼” thick. While increasing the thickness can cut down on sound, the real noise-blocking power comes from stacking layers. Double—and triple-pane windows are far more effective for soundproofing. The combination of mass and separation breaks up sound waves better than thick glass could on its own.

This happens when condensation forms due to your room temperature being lower than its dew point. You can clean the glass with a combination of baking soda, vinegar, and warm water to wipe away the fog from the doors.

If you have a small damaged mirror, chances are it’s better to replace it, as the repair will average around $200, and replacement could cost around the same price. If you’re working with a large mirror—like one over a bathroom vanity or a large floor mirror—or an antique mirror, it’s often more affordable to repair it. Large mirrors can cost hundreds of dollars, and depending on the type of repair you need, you’ll spend just $50 to $200 fixing it, ultimately saving you some money. Antique mirrors might be priceless, so a repair might be the only option.
