We have over 45 years of combined experience with animals and wildlife through outdoor pursuits, farming, and livestock operations. We have a consulting wildlife biologist on staff for technical support and recommendations.

"This guy is a fraud. Long story short I hired him to get rid of a bat problem. I was told I needed work done in the amount of 1500 bucks. Supposedly work was performed but problem was never solved. 14 months later we are still trying to get this guy to honor his warranty or get a refund o. Oh and I found this. This guy has been a fraud for years. [*** Link removed ***]"

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

The nesting period can last up to 10 weeks, and some species will continue to nest four to five times per year. A bird’s nest could continue to stay in use for several months or up until a bird finishes nesting for the year. It’s best to consult a wildlife professional to determine the longevity of a specific bird’s nest.

The cost to hire an exterminator or pest control service is $175 on average, ranging from $50 to $500, depending on the type of animal or insect and size of the infestation. Your service cost also varies depending on the extent of the service. Here are the cost ranges of exterminator services based on frequency:

  • One-time service: $300–$550

  • Initial visit with ongoing service: $150–$300

  • Monthly visits: $40–$70

  • Quarterly visits: $100–$300

  • Annual visits: $300–$550

Both spikes and loose nets can be installed over nest sites to prevent the bird from returning, but nets are not a humane option since birds and other wildlife can get tangled in them.

Spikes are a humane alternative that deter nesting without harming the birds. In small areas, like vents, a very fine mesh net can be installed to prevent the bird from returning. These nets don't generally pose a risk to the birds.

Yes, it’s possible for bats in your attic to find a way into your living spaces. Until you can properly remove the bats, the best course of action is to keep the attic doors closed and any holes sealed. Evidence suggests bats follow the airflow in your home, so they may try escaping from the attic to other parts of the house.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try:

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away.

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.
