Draining is the process of removing sediment buildup that has accumulated at the bottom of your hot water heater’s tank. Flushing is a more elaborate process that involves running fresh water through the tank to clean the inside thoroughly. You should at least drain your hot water heater once per year and flush it every other year—better yet, alternate between draining and flushing every six months.

Some states mandate that anyone doing plumbing work hold a plumber’s license, and some municipalities in other states require licensing, so it depends on where you live. For drain lines, you’ll need a 3-inch PVC pipe for your toilet, a 2-inch PVC pipe for stand-alone showers, and a 1 1/2-inch pipe for a shower/tub combo and the bathroom sink. Each fixture’s drain will run to the 3-inch main drain that runs through the house.

Many plumbers include removing and disposing of the old toilet as part of their service package. However, it’s best to ask before signing a contract, as removal isn’t guaranteed. If the plumber doesn’t take the old toilet, you have several options, including donation, recycling, junk removal, and bulk waste services..

Plumbing repairs cost $180 to $500, depending on the scope and urgency of the issue. A knocking pipe is usually caused by a problem with the water pressure or air pockets, so the costs will likely fall closer to the low end of that range. Pipe replacement will likely cost more than that since it’s a major project.
