"Started late due to Covid and understandable. Once started, either late or didn’t show up. Owner and workers fighting verbally in home. Did not clean up until I finally asked to clean up dust from plaster. Asked for more cash to buy paint and supplies in between job. Then asked for $3,000 over estimate in addition to money already paid. Never responded to request to review invoice. Very unprofessional and would not recommend to anyone."

Starting in a one-car garage at age13, Michael Gregorio began to teach himself the art of woodworking. At 23, he started a custom woodworking business, where he honed his skills to design, build, finish, and install fine furniture, wall units, kitchens, libraries and architectural wall paneling. After 20 successful years on Long Island, he moved upstate to Rhinebeck, and began to expand his skills and delve into the finer arts of antique restoration and studio furniture making. His experience as a furniture maker and designer make him quite unique as a restorer. He is competent to handle all phases of repair and restoration, and with his attention to detail, he is able to reproduce any piece of furniture in any style with great accuracy. He is frequently called upon by other restorers to work on major restoration, repair, custom, and modification projects. Please call today to schedule your appointment (845) 876-6032 or visit our website at www.mgregorio.com

Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Vinegar won’t strip the wood stain from your wood, but it can help remove a different type of stain. If you’re dealing with food stains or trying to remove water rings on your wood, you can use a little olive oil and vinegar (mixed equally) to remove those stains without stripping your actual wood stain. Just rub the solution in the direction of the wood grain, let it sit, and then wipe it away with a damp towel.

Wood can appear blotchy after staining due to uneven absorption, which happens when the wood has varying grain density. The denser the grain, the less the stain will be absorbed. This can cause the wood to appear uneven in color, with some areas darker than others.

To prevent this issue, apply a wood conditioner before staining. Wood conditioners help to equalize the absorption of the stain, resulting in a more even finish. There are many different types of wood conditioners available, so be sure to choose one that is appropriate for the type of wood you are staining.

A cloudy film on top of a wooden surface usually means either the incorrect cleaner was used or there is polish buildup. You’ll need to start over again and remove the surface cleaner with a damp rag and some water and dish soap. Be careful not to leave the wood surface wet as this could cause water damage.

Yes, vinegar can remove polyurethane from wood, but it is a slow, inefficient, and inconsistent restoration method. Whatever your intention, it’s best to avoid using vinegar on wood with a polyurethane finish—though it can be an effective cleaner for other wood finishes.

Wood stain remover should remove most, if not all, of that wood stain on its own. While sanding can be a great final step, especially if you’re planning to paint or restrain the wood, it isn’t always required. Following the first three steps of this process can leave you with beautiful results.
