Small jobs welcome

"Javier painted my 25x10 deck and ceiling above it. He was prompt onetime and did a good job. There was a mix up in the color of the paint which was not his fault. I paid in full for the work. He offered to stop back and give the deck another coat with the right color. He has not returned yet but hope he does. Nice man and good work."

"Outstanding. The company has extremely dedicated and talented craftsmen who work 24/7 to accomplish the task in as short a time as feasible. More often than not, Jaime and his crew would work deep into the night using floodlights and other means of illumination to complete the work. More importantly, Jaime is innovative and creative and comes up with solutions to difficult design problems or creates something de novo that is exactly right for the space. The company actually translates your ideas into the real world thing,"

"They replaced my bathtub, installed a new vanity, put in new lights and painted a wall cabinet. Not only were they punctual, but very polite and reasonable. I highly recommend them and will use them in the future."

"We had some rotting boards that needed replacing, discoloration and the whole deck needed a new finish. Chameleon gave us a very fair estimate and description of what they would do. After installing new wood where needed, they thoroughly prepped the deck with sanding, sweeping, power washing.. Sealed the new seams. They painted over the old color with Olympic oil based paint (our choice). The work site was always neat and orderly."

"Pro Master Construction company is the absolute best company I have hired in over 35 years. Luan came to my house, was very considerate, caring, and knew his business. He solved a nearly impossible problem with an almost rotted and very large 2-tier deck. His crew did an amazing job in just under 3 days. Great work ethics, reasonable cost, and very neat. I am so thankful to have found this company on Angiâ s list."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.
