Furniture repair and refinishing, on site repairs, touch up, deluxing and a host of case goods services that are provided by an experienced owner operator

"Mark was great to deal with. He responded to my email quickly and I was able to bring my chairs in right away. These were 40 year old chairs that were starting to come undone. He took them completely apart and reglued them. Mark is easy to talk to and very professional. He explained exactly what he was going to do and got it done in a reasonable amount of time. I would definitely recommend him."

Nova Finishing is a family owned business with four employees operating in the Rochester area since 1950. We are a member of the National Restoration Center Hot Line and have an A+ rating with the BBB. We pride ourselves in quality workmanship at a fair price.

"We bought this nicely crafted oak rocking chair over 20 years ago at the Corn Hill Festival and it has become my favorite piece of furniture. Recently the left arm broke loose from the back of the chair. I decided to get it repaired by a professional and am glad I went to Nova for the job. Chris did the work on the chair and her craftsmanship (craftswomanship) exceeded the original. I will add that even though there might not be someone at the desk all the time, phone messages and emails are responded to in what I found to be very reasonable times."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

The best way to test the quality of a leather couch is to put your hands on it. If the upholstery is soft and warm, that’s a good indication that the quality is higher. It should also smell like traditional leather. If it smells like chemicals, you’re probably dealing with low-grade leather.

Not always—heavily worn or broken furniture often isn’t worth repairing or refinishing (if it’s even possible). While some damage can be repaired and some of the visual appeal restored, major flaws, such as structural issues, can’t be fixed as easily. If you still want a cost-saving furniture refinishing project rather than purchasing all new, consider shopping for similar secondhand pieces at thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales.

It is possible to reupholster directly over old material in some cases, and it can save you a bit of money. If you are going to go this route, make sure you use a darker color than you had previously. Otherwise, you might see the old fabric beneath the new material. You should also keep in mind that reupholstering over old material is only possible with certain materials. For example, reupholstering over leather usually isn’t possible. You can ask your professional to see if this is an option for your piece.

When hiring an upholsterer, look for a pro with experience in your chair type, positive reviews, and a portfolio of completed projects. Ask about their process, timeline, warranty, and whether they are insured. Getting multiple quotes from reupholsterers in your area and checking their references can help ensure quality and fair pricing.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done
