"He was awesome.  He called back, but he was working in Reed field, North Carolina and he could not get to us for a couple of days.  By the time, he got to us we had already gotten the other estimates, and we were pleased with him.  Hampton guy was great.  He was really quick to get back to us, but he had other projects that he had already lined up.  The experience was very satisfactory.  He was very courteous, and prompt.  He was very honest in saying that he cannot get to us, and if we needed to have this work done now, then we need to have to get somebody else.  I appreciated that."

Garage Doors questions, answered by experts

You should lube your garage door components every three to six months depending on how frequently you open and close the door. Lubricant helps keep garage door components operating smoothly for longer; you can expect a much longer lifespan out of a garage door when you properly care for it, including frequent lubrication. Regular maintenance is much more affordable than the cost of replacing a garage door prematurely.

The best options for lubricating a garage door are silicone- or lithium-based lubricants made specifically for this purpose. These products are designed to deeply penetrate the door's components, such as hinges and springs, providing long-lasting protection against wear and tear. A silicone-based lubricant is an excellent choice as it also prevents rust and corrosion and performs well in extreme heat and cold.

It is important to avoid certain products. Do not use heavy, oil-based lubricants or standard grease, as they can attract dust, dirt, and other debris that may get caught in the tracks. You should also avoid using WD-40, as it can strip away any existing lubrication.

You can typically find appropriate garage door lubricants online or at a local hardware store for less than $10.

The life span of a newly painted garage door depends on the quality of your paint, the material of the door, and the climate you live in. If you’re confident that you’ll maintain the door as best you can, you can expect the job to last between 5 and 10 years.

The best method for painting a garage door depends on the door's design and the finish you want to achieve. For the most professional-looking finish, especially on doors with panels or intricate details, a paint sprayer is an excellent choice. It can easily get into hard-to-reach places and provide a smooth, even coat.

If you don't have a sprayer, or if your door is flat, a combination of a roller and a brush is the most effective approach. Use a roller for the large, flat sections to cover the area quickly and efficiently. For the best results, experts recommend a roller with a nap between ⅜ and ¾ inches thick; natural fibers can also help ensure an even coat.

A brush is essential for handling the finer details. Use it to paint grooves, angles, small panels, and the edges of the door where you need more control.

Regardless of the tools you use, it's a good idea to step back after the main application to review your work and use a detail brush to touch up any missed spots.

In most cases, you do not need planning permission to change a garage door to a normal door, unless a specific restriction is present on your home’s deed. If you’re changing the door because you are trying to convert the garage into a living space, you will need to work with building control for proper signoffs to ensure your conversion meets all of the necessary construction standards.
