"Juan and his crew were extremely professional and courteous, not to mention true artists. We had 1000ft/sq to remove and install Saltillo tile, And shower. We are extremely happy with the results and would not hesitate to recommend Caldera’s Tile for any tile work. Bob Hurtado"

"Allstar Flooring in Santa Fe, New Mexico did a superior job installing a hardwood floor for us. They had to move heavy furniture for the job and they had to install wood transitions from the existing floor to the new flooring. The floor now has a solid foundation with the plywood subfloor and it is extreemely even and beautiful. Allstar flooring also hauled away the old tile and other refuse from the installation. Allstar Flooring workers and owner were all polite and helpful."

"If I could give these guys six stars I would. They came out on Memorial Day just as they said they would and installed my beautiful porcelain arabesque backsplash. They were quiet and tidy. I most definitely will use them again for several different projects. They are excellent!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.

Once cracks appear, it is hard to stop tiles from cracking more. If the cause of the problem is improper subflooring, underlying concrete, improper tile joint sizes, mold growth, or structural issues, the only way to stop floor tiles from cracking is to redo the entire floor, fixing the underlying issues first. If cracks occur after impact damage, hiring a professional tile contractor to replace the cracked tiles, fix loose floor tiles, and restore the grout around them can prevent further damage. It is also important to keep your tile and grout clean and maintained to prolong its life.

The best paints for shower tiles include epoxy, latex, or acrylic. Ideally, you should look for paints that are waterproof and mildew-resistant if you plan to paint shower or other bathroom tiles. You can even find waterproof paints made specifically for tiled surfaces, which will be the best option for shower tile paint that lasts as long as possible.

Figure out how much tile you need by measuring the backsplash area. Measure the height and length in feet and multiply to get the square footage. Don’t make adjustments for outlets or small cutouts but subtract the square footage for windows or other large obstructions from the total. To account for waste, get 10% more than your calculation.

The tile spacing you should use will depend on the tile and where you’re installing it. Choosing the right tile spacers to maintain a consistent gap between your tiles is tricky. Generally, tile spacing shouldn’t be less than 2 millimeters on walls and 3 millimeters on floors because of stress relief requirements. Getting it wrong can result in uneven tiles and early repairs.
