"The Pro From Dover. Former Pro Athlete. Focused. Meticulous. Dry sense of humor. "Can Do' attitude. Superb job. An artiste with the trowel. Down to all the fine details. Cracks disappeared. Stunned. "Gus Mendez, the owner, was amazing. This was a very complex project repairing cracks in our living/dining room foundation. More extensive problems were discovered as the original 35 y/o foundation was poorly done. Gus figured it all out, removed the old foundation and the 8" of wet dirt underneath and replaced with 8" gravel, then rebar grid at 12", then new concrete and tile. Gus was a highly creative technical engineer and problem solver, and with a highly artistic/esthetic sense. There was really no one else who could have done this, as the only other company that does this had an insufficient assessment for the bid. See photos for the process and outcome."

"Hired Mountain Side to move a cinder block wall section and also raise another. Submitted a request for quote via Angie's List and receive a call within an hour. Mountainside sent a rep to my address within a week to generate a free quote. Cuco spent about 30 minutes reviewing my plan and gathering measurements for the project. A quote was sent to me that night and a team arrived a few weeks later to complete the project. All work was completed promptly and professionally. I was present at my property to complete a final inspection before payment, and minor issues I noticed were completed before I made payment. Mountainside also accommodated my last minute modifications to the original plan, after I requested a couple pillars in the new wall section be completely filled for additional strength. I can't say whether the price they gave me is superior to other contractors, since they were the only company that responded to my requests. However, I felts the price was reasonable for the project. Communication with everyone at Mountainside was easy and prompt, and they contacted me prior to moving forward with any step along the way. I definitely will reach out to Mountainside to complete any future masonry projects I need done down the road. Definitely recommended!"

"I have never worked with a contractor so dedicated to excellence and customer service. Victor built a gorgeous trex deck that is just extraordinary. The workmanship is above and beyond anyone we have ever worked with. We plan on doing many more improvements on our home simply because Victor and his team are superb. His pool of talent is amazing. We will start more projects including a fountain in our courtyard, and additional Diamond finish plaster in our living room."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.
