But with the proper maintenance (which includes re-sealing the countertops to protect them from damage), you can prevent your onyx countertops from scratching and repair any damage quickly to prevent it from worsening.

Marble countertops are often considered better than limestone because of their superior durability and luxurious appearance. Marble is harder and less prone to scratching and denting, though it still requires maintenance and sealing to prevent stains and etching. Marble is typically more expensive, but its beautiful veining and range of colors offer a high-end look. 

You can cut food on tough, scratch-resistant granite countertops. However, these hard surfaces can quickly dull your knife blades, and continual cutting in the same spot can eventually lead to marks forming and compromising the protective sealant.
