Pergolas have no base structure to hold them up, so it’s necessary to attach them to some type of foundation. Most pergolas require a minimum of at least four concrete footings to keep them solid and stable in the ground. Attaching the pergola to a concrete foundation is an option as well.

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.

There are a few differences between pergolas and gazebos. Both structures provide shade, but pergolas are more minimalistic, with four posts and a terraced roof. Gazebos usually have an elevated floor and are typically shaped like a polygon with six or eight open-air sides and two small sets of steps leading up to the platform. Gazebos also tend to have pointed, shingled roofs and ornate accents. If you want a structure that keeps out water on rainy days, a gazebo may be a better option—though you can purchase an awning to go over your pergola to keep out water.

Consider the height of the plants you plan on using with the trellis, as they will need the right amount of support to grow.

Turnbuckle weight loads vary depending on their size. Smaller 1/4-inch turnbuckles have a weight capacity of about 500 pounds. A 3/8-inch diameter turnbuckle, which is strong enough to handle most residential fence gates, can handle a working load of 1,200 pounds. Larger 1/2-inch diameter models have a limit of 4,000 pounds.
