First, branches that hang over and touch your roof can promote roof damage and moss accumulation, which can lead to leaking. Deciduous shade trees (the type of trees whose leaves fall off in autumn) need to be pruned in late winter—between February and March. That’s because it’s easier to find and remove sick or dead branches when no leaves are present. While it’s best to have access to large, healthy, strong trees in a safe position, treehouse living is still possible without them. You might notice rot or fungus on the trunk or that the tree is beginning to lean to one side. Brittle branches or signs of root damage are other indicators that a tree is in trouble. If the tree is dying, it might be time to cut the tree down so it doesn’t fall.
