"I had squirrels scurrying around in my attic crawl space for months. I tried putting in mothballs, flashing lights, banging on the walls, throwing socks filled with fox-urine-scented animal repellent granules -- nothing worked to deter those squirrels from coming back and nesting in my attic. Finally I gave up on my home remedies and called three professional animal control companies to give me estimates on fixing the problem. The discrepancy in price was jaw-dropping, for basically the same solution. One company wanted $1000, one wanted $1300 and Alco wanted $500. Two great guys, Angel and Don, came and went up a ladder to inspect the hole in corner of the roof where I had seen the squirrels coming and going. They identified two other potential problem areas in other parts of the roof. They put in a one-way wire tunnel, and put two sizes of wire mesh around the area of the entry hole. Within less than a day the squirrels had left the attic. I saw them attempting to return, but they could not. In a few days, the guys came back, removed the tunnel and sealed up the hole with wire mesh. The underscored how important it was for me to get a roofer to replace the wood and shingles that the squirrels had chewed through, in order to prevent rainwater and snow melt from getting inside the walls of my house. They were knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to deal with throughout the process, and gave a one-year guarantee. The more expensive companies offered exactly the same service, but didn't bring a ladder to examine the problem. If squirrels or other critters ever get back in, I will definitely call Alco again. "My pregnant wife and I were looking to add on to out 100 year old house for the baby. We got a home improvement loan through a bank and hired Baby Bear to do the work. They very quickly started the job, demolishing the kitchen and dining room first. Keep in mind, my wife and I are living in the house during this construction. Constructing the new foundation is where things started to fall apart. They claimed they couldn't dig for the longest time because it was rainy. We weren't in a terrible hurry to finish the job so we were okay with this for a while. They demolished the deck, at some point. Then when they finally did dig, they found a small hole in the foundation. This caused all work to stop until the foundation could be assessed. It turned out the existing foundation needed to be fixed before they could move forward. This was quoted by Baby Bear to cost around $60k. This quote is way our of line for what it should have cost. At this point, my wife and I were ready to fire them. This is after they received around $22k from our bank loan. At some point around when we were firing them, they came back and said they could do the foundation for $10k. I assumed this was some tactic to keep us on the hook, we decided to let them go anyway and go with another contractor. They refused to give us any of the money back for the foundation they never constructed. They left a mess in our yard from the demolition, which some part of that $22k should have covered for them to take care of. At the end of the day, we got swindled by this company, but we still got the house built, but it was infinitely more difficult without the money they walked off with. We had to cut a lot of corners, I had to do a lot of the work myself and I had to go with lower end materials for parts of the job.
