"Called Ralph to replace a 20 year old toilet that was regularly getting clogged. He suggested a reasonably priced toilet that had a more vigorous flushing mechanism. He squeezed me in for appointment since I told him I had guests staying over shortly and and did not want any embarrassing toilet incidents. Ralph and his assistant Peter were very careful, knowledgeable , and neat during the entire removal and installation of new toilet. His pricing was very fair. Would certainly call him in the future."

"Joe from Drain Logics was very knowledgeable and professional. He did excellent repair work on a toilet flange that had been penetrated by tree roots. He had to break up the concrete, cut out the old flange and replace. He patched the concrete and put the bathroom back to where it was. He took the time to explain the issues and showed me the actual root before he pulled it out as much as he could. A wonderful, knowledgeable, hardworking and p lo peasant young man. He is now our plumbing go-to guy going forward. Highly recommended!"

"Clean, professional, and personable. Not at all what I was expecting from a plumber. Customer for life. The best part of the experience was how informative George was at each step and how interactive the project was (I was more than happy to lend a hand/hand tools). His pricing is right in line with the value you receive!!! Thank you, Olympic!!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Tools include pipe wrenches, plungers, and augers. Professionals use advanced equipment for complex issues.

The cost to install a new toilet typically runs from $225 to $530. This doesn’t include the price of the toilet itself, which can cost $90 to $1,500 depending on the model and features you choose. You can save money if you choose to install a toilet yourself. However, you might want to hire a pro for this project.

"Due to the many complexities of replacing a toilet flange, it is typically a job best left to the pros," says Jeff Botelho, Angi Expert Review Board member and plumber. "Many times it isn't as simple and straightforward as 'pop off the old one and pop on a new one' because the flange is either glued on (PVC/ABS), soldered on (brass/copper), or caulked in place with a lead & oakum joint (cast iron) and none of these things can be easily reversed without years of training and repetitive practice."

Yes, and no. Your shower, toilet, and sink all connect to the same main drain, but the secondary drains going from each fixture to the main drain are usually separate. This isn’t always the case—especially in older homes—but since toilets contain black water and showers, tubs, and sinks have grey water, toilets are more regulated and come at a greater risk of contamination. It’s best to keep these drains separate using individual waste collection for this reason.

The water in your toilet tank refills after each flush. So if you see dirty water in the bowl, you should check the tank to see if it’s coming from there. A dirty toilet tank can be the result of sediment in the water itself—-after all, the water will sit in the tank between flushes and can cause the interior to change into a dingy color. Faulty toilet components, like an old flapper, corroded tank lever or chain, or damaged seals, can also lead to dirty water as the materials break down inside the tank. You can clean the toilet tank or change out the old parts to give it a fresh start.

Sealant doesn’t need to be applied to the bolts, but it can be a good way to stop an active leak in the moment. However, don’t rely on it as a cure-all; instead, make sure to fix the problem at the source by changing or tightening the bolts.

If you do use sealant, make sure to spread it thickly and evenly across the bolts and the tank's porcelain.
