You need to service an HVAC system about twice per year, with a service including an inspection and basic maintenance. No, for two very important reasons. First, it’s illegal to release refrigerant into the air or ground since it can be toxic and cause environmental damage. Technicians typically pump old or extra refrigerant into separate tanks for special disposal. Second, without professional equipment to read refrigerant pressure and levels, plus the AC’s suggested requirements, it’s impossible to know if you’ve removed the right amount of refrigerant. Stay away from a DIY solution here and seek an expert with the right tools.

While personal preferences widely vary, sleep experts say the best temperature for sleeping is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit rather than 78. If you do choose to sleep with your AC unit tuned to 78 degrees, you might want to use only a sheet or light blanket rather than a comforter. You might also consider installing a window unit in your bedroom so that you can be cooler in bed without wasting energy cooling the whole house.

Freon circulates through your AC unit in a closed loop, so ideally, all of it should remain inside your system and never need to be replaced. However, if your AC starts leaking Freon (which is common), you’ll need to top it up. Known as an AC recharge, the cost of adding refrigerant to your air conditioner depends on the size and type of the AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant.

Florida rooms can have heat or air conditioning, although not all do. These rooms can be added to the existing HVAC system or use a mini-split system, or they may just use a ceiling fan or the breeze from the windows for cooling. Florida rooms with air conditioning often have glass windows to keep the cool inside instead of just mesh screens.
