"From the minute I called for an estimate till the time the job was completed these guys were great. They worked with me to schedule a date to start the job and they were here at exactly 8:00am the day of. There were 6 guys that showed up. 4 guys were always on the roof and 2 guys were on the ground constantly cleaning up. They wrapped my house in tarps and none of my shrubs or items were damaged. In about 1.5 hours they had my old roof removed. I then walked on the roof with Mike (whose the roofing crew supervisor) and noticed that 2 panels had to be replaced. Mike also said that he would have to remove at least 2 rows of siding to properly put the ice barrier shield under it. This company cuts a groove into your brick chimney to properly seal the chimney which I found out not all companies do that. They ice wrapped a majority of my roof and started putting on the new shingles. At around 4:00pm the job was done and completely cleaned up. Since my siding is older, Mike did not want to install the siding back on, but wanted me to have it done by their siding crew. The next day it rained so the following day, Dan and his siding crew, arrived at 8:00 am on the dot and within 3 hours had all my siding back up. Both Mike and Dan were great and answered all my questions. I believe this company went above and beyond to get the job properly done. I would definitely recommend this company."

"Garden State Garage and Siding was definitely the best choice i could have made. After numerous quotes from other companies and some shady estimates i decided to go with these guys to replace my roof. Nuno and his crew are all personable, they're not pushy and they're super respectful. From the initial consultation and even when they started they were more than transparent. Nuno even sent progress pictures along the way since this particular house was a rental. I would recommend to anyone in the Bergen County that needs a new roofing contractor or a siding contractor. Thanks again guys!"

"The job was done as agreed. I am very pleased with the work and would hire him again. Anyone wanting their siding repaired should consider him. He was very clear on how the areas that needed fixing were going to get repaired. Everything was taken care of and even a spot I had not previously seen. They do very good work!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

If you buy new cedar, the process of cutting it usually roughs up the surface enough that it doesn’t require sanding. However, if you buy older cedar or you’re repurposing it from another application, it’s a good idea to sand it. This helps the stain settle into the grain, and results in a more uniform appearance.

Vinyl siding is the cheapest option in terms of upfront costs. The average cost to install vinyl siding is around $12,173, with certain types like vinyl shake, clapboard, or dutch lap costing as little as $2 to $3 per square foot. While vinyl is very low-cost, it may not last as long as natural materials or metal, with a typical lifespan of 20 to 40 years. In contrast, metal siding is more expensive initially but can save you money in the long run due to its longer lifespan, which is often double that of vinyl. It's recommended to consult a siding professional to determine if the lowest-cost option is the best material for your specific home.

Composite siding is very resistant to warping that can affect some other sidings. Because of its composition, this siding doesn’t have the same risks of moisture damage that can cause rotting, buckling, and warping. Composite material doesn’t warp in high temperatures the way some kinds of vinyl siding can.

That said, composite siding is not entirely immune from moisture damage. It should still be properly installed so that moisture can properly drain from behind the siding, and protected by eaves and clean gutter so the siding doesn’t get repeatedly soaked by rain, which could lead to damage.

You should consider a siding replacement material that meets your expectations for budget, durability, and if you want to complete the siding project yourself. Some materials are better than others in certain climates and easier to install for beginners. If you’re unsure which material suits your home, check with a local contractor for guidance.

You can calculate the required square footage of siding you need by measuring the height and width of your home’s rectangular exterior walls. For the triangular-shaped gable walls, measure the height from the ground to the tallest gable point to make sure you have enough for good coverage. Once you have combined the totals for each wall, add another 10% to account for wasted materials. It’s also good to have extra siding on hand to tackle wood siding repair down the road.
