"We highly recommend Wilber's Painting!! We were extremely pleased with the entire crew and the caliber of their work. Ronnie & Jose managed their crew very well. Much of our trim woodwork was alligatored and the crew patiently sanded the surface to a smooth finish. They also did an excellent job of removing the alligatored paint on our 6 fluted columns and shutters as well as repairing the soffit of our garage. All in all, they seem to know how to tackle the painting problems that are associated with a 100+ year old house. We give them very high marks and thank them for a job well done!"

"The job was done as agreed. I am very pleased with the work and would hire him again. Anyone wanting their siding repaired should consider him. He was very clear on how the areas that needed fixing were going to get repaired. Everything was taken care of and even a spot I had not previously seen. They do very good work!"

"I needed stucco repair work on an old chimney (and other spots). Grady was meticulous and thoughtful on what approaches and materials would work. Throughout the project they allocated sufficient time for each treatment to cure and inspected the work before proceeding to the next step. Grady started the project with no money down and only required ongoing payments for materials until the project was well underway. The final payment was due only after they did a final inspection. Total project cost was also below other bids."

"I recommended Slats and Pleats to my sister from Angie's List, and she decided to give them a call. Paul, the owner, came as planned in November and took all the measurements for the windows and for the french doors. It took about 6 weeks or so to get the shutters installed, as was promised. (My sister wanted the shutters without the middle spines, so I believe this may have taken longer than those with the spines.) The installers came, and it took them the better part of the day to do the installation. They were very polite, careful, and professional. All and all, this was a very positive experience. The shutters look beautiful, and fit perfectly. My sister was very pleased with Slats and Pleats!

"The crew arrived on time. They did a fair job of cleaning the windows, but they could have done better. The attention to detail was lacking. Used a coupon for the service. I might hire them again, but would have to supervise their work carefully."

Window Shutter Repair questions, answered by experts

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

The average shutter is designed to last 20 to 25 years. Proper maintenance for the type of shutters you have is essential for helping them reach their full potential.
