"We just had our basement finished. Not re-finished but finished for the first time. The house was built in 1924 with a dirt floor in the basement and low hanging pipes, overall a very challenging job. We wanted to turn it to a family room with a full bath, laundry room, closets, etc. Joe's guys (Chico and Javier) did a fantastic job. They are knowledgeable, thorough, thoughtful, and creative. We would recommend them to anyone without hesitation."

"My husband and I are beyond grateful to All-Star contractors for doing an excellent job on finishing/remodelling our basement. We never imagined that our basement will look this good despite the small size (we live in a townhome). Every space was made functional. Bill (the contractor) is very fair, always listen and give recommendations as needed. The price is appropriate for the excellent work done. Bill's crew is very hardworking and takes pride in his work - making sure that we will be pleased and always asked if there is anything or issue that needs to be addressed. We are in the process of lining up our next project with Bill. We will definitely not settle for another company for any work we need whether it is something minor or major. If you are looking for someone trustworthy - we will definitely recommend Bill without a doubt."

"It was a 2nd time that we worked with Justin, the owner of Innozign contracting. He did a great job. The only reason that I didn't give a 5 star acknowledgment is due to the fact that project took much longer than scheduled, which in part was due to the twp's inspection schedule. I can recommend Innozign contracting full heartedly for any phase of a remodeling project. Justin has delivered top quality work from Start to the end. He works meticulously organized and deliberate, he is open to discussion, calm and always cooperative and very friendly. He would not be satisfied until the job others have done has been executed to his and your standards. I can only recommend Innozign which he represents for these kind of projects and we are doing a follow up project with him right away."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

A finished basement does not always count as square footage, as this varies by state regulations. In areas that allow below-grade spaces to be included in a home's official square footage, the basement must typically meet certain conditions. These conditions often include having a functional egress and being a livable space with flooring, finished walls, and temperature control. To be certain, contact your local assessor to confirm your area's specific policies regarding basement square footage.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

While framing a basement is not as difficult as finishing a basement, it's something you should typically leave to the pros. That’s because if something is installed correctly, it will affect your entire basement. However, you can take care of some of the smaller tasks, like filling holes or putting up some insulation.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.
