"Jonathan C. from Franchetti Tile did a fantastic job. He came the same day I called and gave me an estimate. He advised me where to go to get the best porcelain tile at a reasonable price. He then picked up the tile, delivered it to my home and he and his son installed the tile in three days. He was very professional and my kitchen floor looks terrific. When I'm ready to renovate my bathroom, Jonathan will be my first call."

"It went well, once Matt was finally able to come and do the work. He has a good sense of design and how to do tile layouts that look right. He talked me into laying out the 12 x 24" tiles in a stacked bond pattern when I had been thinking of a running bond pattern. It looked good, plus was a more efficient use of the tile."

"He was efficient, fast and very creative. I was a hurricane Sandy victim and now i'm getting compliments on my bathroom from everyone that sees it. I had a problem with my kitchen counter top not butting up correctly and he improvised to make it look like it was designed to be that way. He did a beautiful job on these aluminum silver tile back splash. Looks absolutely fabulous. At that time, everyone was charging outrageous hurricane prices but he stuck to his regular prices for me. I am a 72 year old widow that desperately needed an honest contractor and luckily, I found one. I can't recommend this man enough."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The best bathroom floor tiles are strong enough to withstand the weight of a clawfoot tub. However, professional tile installation is essential. If the tiles are uneven or improperly fixed, they may crack under the pressure. Be careful when installing the tub—if it drops or drags on the tiles, it could easily cause scratches or cracks.

Grouting hearth tiles is one of the most important steps. It seals the tiles so heat doesn’t transfer under the tiles so easily, which can be dangerous. For this reason, heat-resistant grout is a must. Grout also prevents dust, dirt, and any other material from gathering between your tiles. If this happens and those buildups are flammable, a fire could start between the tiles.

Many homeowners have successfully retiled a bathroom themselves. It can be a challenging but rewarding process, but it’s best for someone who already has at least intermediate DIY skills.

The difference between floor and wall tiles is that floor tiles generally have higher strength and porosity ratings than wall tiles. Wall tiles are typically weaker and more likely to crack or become damaged under sustained pressure like high foot traffic.

For this reason, avoid using wall tiles on floors and vice versa.

Tiles last for around 100 years or more. Tiles on backsplashes can last even longer since they’re less likely to crack under foot traffic or from accidental drops, but even tile in high-traffic flooring can last a century or more with proper installation and upkeep. Porcelain tiles are denser and stronger than standard ceramic tiles, so they’ll last longer, often pushing past the 100-year mark.
