"I contacted Sunlight and left a message as to the work that we were looking to have done. John called me back that night and he was at my home the next day to give us an estimate on the work to be done. John and Lou came to the house at the time they had promised and started their work. You never would've know that sanding had been done because they were meticulous and cleaned everything before they left. We contacted them again a day later because there was one spot on the ceiling that didn't take right away. Unlike other contractors, John returned my email right away and he and Lou were here the next day. My dining room ceiling looks as good as new! A family owned business that I would call again and again."

"I hired Mr. Gruber to work at my 93 year old Moms house, he was patient and kind to her as well as did an excellent job on power washing part of the house, and deck, and staining the deck. He sent me pictures, every step of the way, and kept in touch, using email and texts. I would recommend him very highly . Robert S. in Bridgewater NJ"

Small jobs welcome

"My garage doors woodwork had peeling paint and needed a refresh. Jorge devised a solution that minimized the rework and avoided the need for future repainting. The final result was excellent and the garages now look like new. The work was performed efficiently and the site cleaned up before they left. Based on this, I have asked Jorge for estimates for two other jobs I have that require rework."

"This is the 2nd time I've used Freeborne and I would definitely have them back again. They built a 12' X 16' enclosed room on a 2nd story deck and it came out great. Lenny, Scott and crew knew what we wanted and exceeded our expectations without over complicating the project. There were no budget surprises either. The amount we discussed at the beginning was what we were charged. If I could I would use them to do projects inside of the house!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Staining and sealing the underside of a deck creates a moisture barrier but traps water in the boards, quickly leading to rot. No matter how well you seal the above deck, water still gets through via nails and screw heads on the surface. Allow this water to flow naturally under the deck, where it is routed through the drainage system.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.
